Personally, at the nose down the stringer.

Before I decide to look left or right, I check if the set is peeling to the right or left, then i look toward the open face that I need to drive through.

Uhhh when I'm not looking back at the wave over my shoulder, I'm looking at the tip of the nose of the board making sure its just BARELY above the water, even going under the water some if its rough out, so that my weight is far enough forward that I can catch the small ass waves I usually surf. If the surf is bigger, I could be looking for it to be a bit higher above the water so I don't pearl. But thats what I'm looking at, is the angle of the nose and if need be I will adjust my position on the board or my feet to adjust my weight on the board.

im looking down the line to see if anyone is taking off on the same wave. i can feel my takeoffs so i dont need to look at the board or anything.

When I know I want to paddle for one.. I look at the nose to judge if Im centered on my board.. then look on the inside to see if anyone is there, then down the line I want to take.. :D

straight in front of me as i start paddling to check theres no one directly in front. then down the line. then check over my shoulder just before i pop up to make sure im not dropping in. then its all about back down the line through the pop up looking at the section i need to make and decide what kind of bottom turn i need.

i look back as the wave nears. if it's a right, i'll look over my left shoulder so i can see where it is and if anyone has already dropped in. then as i feel the wave, look down the line

I seem to browse around at everyone with a smile on my face !

Ha, but within this browse all areas are verified as clear for launch, the possibility of an over the falls dumping assessed, and the route and the inside at the estimated end of ride examined to see if I’d be okay to try a dullard move, inevitably resulting in a flailing board wipeout
