Should I push for a carer in surfing? - Hawaii?

Well, due to several events that are currently not doing so well, I might have to make a few choices. I have developed the love for surfing and it's something I would like to end up doing a lot and very well, even competing when the time comes.
As for these certain events, I might be moving to Houston, TX for 6 months and planning on surfing at Galveston (an hour away from Houston) and after those 6 months of College at Houston going to an University at Hawaii, simply because of the surf. I honestly have no clue if this is a great idea, if I'm being smart or what, but surfing is something I am not going to quit no matter what.
Any comments... suggestions?
edit: btw, I'm crazy.

How old are you? How long you been surfing? Ever surfed Hawaii?
You might be able to pull it off.. but it takes SERIOUS dedication and probably a good amount of luck as well (from what I think). Im new to surf.. but I absolutely love watching contests.. Im not competition material, but hey, if you have the dedication for it.. Go after it. Don't ask people if its a good idea.. if its what your mind and heart is pulling for.. Try for it. Try to not get discouraged. Im sure it's a VERY difficult thing to pull off.. but if you make it there, imagine how badass it is! Professional surfers are living it nice.. surfing everyday, making money from it.. competing, girls, sun, ocean, drinks, parties.. lol.
Keep the ideals in your head, keep the stoke built up. Be smart about it though. Good luck man.

I'm 19 years old. I am new to surfing. I believe I can put enough dedication effort and support from my parents to keep surfing and going to specific spots every once in a while to surf. I know it would not be easy and I will get many people telling me many things (just in like ANYTHING else) but it's not really about competing. It's about learning, it's about living for what you love, and I have to admit, even thought I am new, I have never felt this way about a sport. I've already have had 5 surf sessions in the past week and a half having the beach an hour and a half away with waves from 1' to 4'. We're on summer, so the waves are not that big, but can go a lot taller up to 7'. You're very right about asking. I just needed to hear someone else, right now I am in a very weird situation, and all I can think of is surfing and no matter what happens just making sure I go to a place I can surf, would love it to be daily... I don't know...

i m in the same shoe as you. i m planning to go to ucsb graduate school after 1 year, just because the campus is right infront of the beach. I don't think anybody can decide whether this is smart or a stupid idea. its just lifestyle some people decide to devote on. Its a hobby that will never leave my soul until my joint is too weak to pop up(can't wait till i m those old people surfing on those large ass1 longboard w00t)

I was also considering going to California for the surfing. I just really need to check things out I guess. Would love to meet some people from these locations and hang out there once and surf, maybe with that I could decide on what is what I am looking for and best for me. Some people might find it stupid asking this online, but right now, I have nowhere else to go. It's a long story.

Going to Uni where there is surf which is a good idea. Then get a job where there is surf, this way you'll be able to surf all the time and if you're good I'm sure the sponsers will tell you to quit your job.

I'd love to dedicate my life to it. However, I think the older you get the harder it will be to get noticed by sponsers, etc. I mean check out all the young rippers in the young guns films for example. some of them are still teenagers and are shredding next level!
Although i guess if your entering comps some peeps are pushing 40 years old so you've got over 20 years there to get good. Just enjoy it man whatever you do and dont take it too seriously. i get the impression a lot of pro's think competitive surfing is over rated as a lot of them take time out to freesurf and get back into loving it for what it is
i'm 21, have 2 years left at university. part of me wants to enter work and earn a good living and retire early. another part of me wants to go to indo straight after and live the dream whilst im still young. tough decisions

Thanks for all the positive comments. I wasn't really expecting much, I know it could be difficult and there is always the possibility of not getting where you want, but only by living by the beach, with a nice job that pays a simple yet enjoyable life while surfing right in a beach 2 blocks away from my house, is the way I would like to live.

So I think either way, it's a win-win situation.

going to uni where theres surf is definately a good idea. as is getting a job near surf. however at 19 and new to surfing i fear you may have missed the surfing career boat by a good few years. stick at it though you never know. you may have some god given talent that will show through. good luck.

Hey man just talked to a good friend of mine who happens to be a pro. He called me lastnight and I brought this topic up he allmost said the same as me One must persue their want's and dreams!!!! But do so smartly. Look in time and with no doubt you'll get better and better your young and ony have one direction to go. Keep in mind though getting that degree is still the single most important thing you must obtain. what would happen if ya got dragged across some reef rendering you unable to surf pro or semi pro????? It's called GAME OVER and you would allways have that little piece of papper from school that let's you make it in this harsh world.Think about it all these sponsers are neat and cool but still have an underline $$$$ greed and corporate B.S. and have no prob dropin your azz cause somthing went wrong and they will just sign the next you and move on. Look at some outher pros in outher sports (ie football) at college they got the degree and gametime for thier sports career can and is short lived. Keep your eye on the ball!!!! school first surf second besides with 4 or 5 year degree means you got 4 to 5 years surf time under yer belt and you should be kickin azz and rippin surf plus in all that time made more than enough contacts and knowhow. Don't get me or my friend wrong I'd do the same as he did to me KICK YOU IN THE HAIRY BEAN SAC(no school for me ,done it allready but the water thing is the same) keep your azz in school and in the water so much you won't have time to sleep making you a pro at both.GO FOR IT!!! I for one will support you and your choice to persue a surf pro gig but will only commit that if you commit to the hard hard road of school and commitment to surfing It's gonna take. Best of luck to ya and if your ever in So Cal L.A. area I"ll go out with you and show you what not to do LOL. Oh yea allso If anybody tells you NO or neg shiz "F em" don't let anybody "mind F" you and you know you better than anybody else " You can lie to everybody but you can't lie to yourself" again good... Na great luck hope to see ya make it!!

Hahaha, don't worry, I am not dropping out of college, while going to college I'll devote tremendous time to surfing too. Actually, I have now a positive move. Instead of moving ot Houston I will be moving to Brownsville, 20 mins from South Padre Island which it does have good waves, specially to keep learning. Then I am thinking if I should go to college in California or Hawaii. The whole shark/reef situation kinda worries me but I need to find what would be the best for surfing (college will still be an ongoing thing) but I want to commit a lot to surf.

Well bra tough choice.... California by far has some of the best schools period and some of the best surf found in the world plus the cost of livin here is way less than Hawaii but Hawaii does by far have better waves as the shark / reef thing goes gotta get that out of yer head or you won't be focused on the task at hand (catchin waves!). Hell anybody who says they are not scared of sharks, reef wpieouts, etc is full of S#!T but it goes with the sport and if ya have the love of the game you'll just accept it besides shark chomps are very very rare odds are stacked so in your favor it will never most likely never happen as for the ouchy on a reef or sea bottom that is and will happen the best ya can do is pray it will be minimal in the shiz I'm hurt dept plus when your out especialy in the harder danger zones we look out for each outher!!!!! as we should allways be doing. Cool man sounds like yer head is on strait with the school surf thing and to see any blog yer mabie past yer prime is a joke. I understand that a whole lotta pros started surfin in diapers and have allot of time in it but look at the ASP and the ages or look at some of the cats in thier 45+ range that 90% of us can't even come close to what they do and shiz at 19 if ya keep focused and commited there is no reason I won't see you on the pages of mags/adds. Hell as my bud is 30+ that would give you 10/15 years just how good do ya think you'll be in that time???? Hmmmm makes me think of a grocery store clerk who was (old) and walked in off the street and tried out for/became a pro NFL quarterback and just happens to be one of the best all timers!!!!!! Just goes to show you anything is pos. Best of luck and do it just get that NEG shiz outa yer head like sharks and the sort k..... O.K.

Slater grew up in Florida and he did pretty well, no? I say go to California and forget about Hawaii, if only because you would have a hard time explaining to a future employer why you ended up there. "I wanted to be a pro surfer" is not the greatest sales pitch during a job interview.

Half the reason Slater is the way he is, is because of the east coast. The crappy closing out waves of the EC has taught him how to read waves. Along with natural ability, incredible dedication, and starting when he could walk.
How about instead of raising your hopes to being a rich pro, lower your taste for expensive things, move to a cheap third world country and just chill.
