Surfing Waves

Wondering how many of you when learning to surf had to head out in the small waves on your own to practice?

Its inevitable, especially since as a beginner you have to surf crap that most experienced surfers won't bother on, and since you have to go out so often to learn effectively. You get comfortable out there alone after a while. Although I prefer to be out with one other person.

You'll learn pretty quickly what you can handle and what you can't. It did take me about 3 months to get really comfortable alone.

It helps to have like a partner or a friend to surf together. If you're a beginner it maybe wise to see any beginneer who would like to paddle out with ya. It really helps you in ur surfing because they can critique on your problem and joke around with ya, make your day that much better.

definitely more sensible to have a buddy with you when you're learning.. but if you're going to be dedicated going out alone is hard to avoid.

although, one of my best sessions was in a hidden but not secluded spot (close to a pub over here, for those irish surfers who may know it). clean head height waves, first day of the year w/o gloves and hood. not a single surfer out. remember sitting out back between sets thinking "this is what its all about".

I learned alone my first few times out then went with some buddies who knew how to surf. Didn't help I picked a pretty localized beach to learn ... that was funny haha.

i pretty much always surf alone although there are generally other surfers out in the water but not always.

I did. Then about every 5th or 6th time out I'd have an experienced buddy come to critique and teach me for a couple of hours. Then I'd go alone for a few weeks. Then I'd call an experienced buddy again, etc.

have to surf alone...if you want to go when it is on. Usually I will surf with bros when I can but it is inevitable that I surf alone 80% of the time.


As a grom I did pal up to save gas and get rides, cuz my sketchy cars.

during the winter i surf alone a lot,and wheni say alone i mean with grumpy surfers in north wales...................

I mostly surf alone

I surfed alone for years. Still do on the odd session.

I do at the momment, but hopefully I can get my friends to buy some boards

Ive surfed 'alone' in New Zealand and Scarborough but you just get talking to the locals etc so you're not technically alone but down under i think there was like 5 people in the sea as it was only small but i guess it just depends on the person really.

the winter scares off a lot of the fair weather surfers.... that mixed with differing work schedules and hunger for waves means lone sessions are inevitable....
just use your common sense... stay away from the more dangerous breaks, and really rough seas and you should be fine....
don't forget the rule of thumb - "if in doubt don't go out"
kept me out of any real trouble so far!!
