Surfing Waves

Do you think if all the secret spots in the world were known by everyone then there would always be more than enough waves to go around?

Maybe, maybe not? over to you...

Its another classic debate...

Personally.. I doubt it becuase of the access issues to many of these spots... Thats the only thing that stops crows nowadays, People are too lazy to find them!

Thinking about it, probably not, unless there are like loads of secret spots. But in some countries I bet there is loads of great surf and no surfers, so maybe there is.

Also consistancey comes into play... the UK has about 50% rideable waves but not accross the whole coast.. this is going to pack in sessions and crowds tighters.. esp during the summer flatness.

i know of one secret spot in saint augustine. wont say the location though. but if the surf in augustine is about waist high then that spot will be about chest high.

I don't know if there are really any potential secret spots left.
The internet, GIS aerial photography & mapping etc have made the whole globe accessable if you want to research potential destinations, certainly in my country which is supposidly a remote & wild unspoiled place (New Zealand) the whole country is mapped & profiled, both land & immediate underwater costal profile. There are no hidden reefs on isloated coasts here anymore. You can get the whole deal on a CD for $29.95.

The thing is- are people still prepared to go & get to those obscure places? Are they prepared to walk across farm paddocks for two hours, or charter a fishing boat to get to a break on the chance it'll be better than a spot facing the same swell window etc just up the road with a car-park alongside. Um, sometimes I wonder..it's well documentated we are becoming a civilisation of overweight couch dwellers living our adventurous lives via the discovery channel? Is that a fair comment??

I can say with confidence in my country we're fast becoming a culture of "sports watchers" via Sky TV rather than actual sports doers. Certainly in most mainstream sports. Does it apply to surfers as well...I don't know.

look man there is already plenty of literiture on surfing breaks out there and the only reason any one publishes those spots anyway is they are eather to much of a wuss to surf alone or they want to get noticed my mag or some such sh!t don't do it man most of the time it pisses people off

This is the real key to the whole thing. There are a whole host of people who have never and will never be bothered about going to look for other waves because they have their own waves on the doorstep. Newquay in the UK is always so busy now because everyone who takes up surfing in the UK is going to have heard of Newquay as a good surfspot. Same everywhere - to use an NZ example, Taylors in Christchurch is always busy but if you can be bothered to jump in the car you can be on your own in an hour.
Should secret spots be revealed to all? - No - those bothered to go and look should be rewarded with less crowded surf.

i had the line up to myself for about 2 hours yesterday on a popular beach in the uk wont say what one but all it requires is a little walk down the beach and you are clear from all the croweds people are lazy and will only surf nearest to where they parked if your willing to walk 1/2 a mile or so you can still clear the croweds on the busyest days

:D Hey, this is complte unbiased cos I dont know any secrets spots so I have to stick to inconsistent South Coast! But we shouldnt give them away, whats the point? there are perfectly good conventional spots aand chances are while you are surfing there if you go explore you will find secret spots, anyway if you want better places to surf buy the Surf UK book, I got it and its well good! the other thing is it tells you that there are secret spots but it doesnt even give you a hint where they are!
