Hi guys. I recently fractured my elbow and got a cast on. They said it'll be on for 3 weeks and I can't get the cast wet (sucks trying to have a shower or bath). So I guess I won't be in the water for at least 3 weeks.
Has anyone suffered an injury (from surfing or something else) that has taken away their ability to surf?
Cheers.

Here's a list
-(Currently) While skimboarding I sliced a 2 inch gash in my foot --> 5 Stitches = No surfing/skimboarding for about a week
-Ruptured Pectoral muscle from swimming (swimming 80km a week as a distance swimmer)
-Bruised both elbows/wrists
-Broken nose from a longboarder who ditched his board
I think that it's it! I still went out with the bruised elbows/wrists I think! I'm very accident prone though!

I can't go out every day because of pain in my elbows, and I've been feeling sorry for myself while I ice it down after I go out from swelling but...
compared to your elbow, mine ain't nothing at all. So, thanks for putting things in perspective.

Who hasn't had any injury that's taken them away for awhile? My most serious was when I broke my neck 15 years ago, was actually paralyzed from the neck down for a spell. After fusion surgery and a year or so working my strength back up I was back out there.
Most recently (yesterday) I spent all day in the ER with what the docs think is an infection in the lining of my lung. I haven't even gotten to try out the 6' 2" Aviso I picked up last weekend...

broken both my legs at different times playing football, broke my right shin in 2000 then my left ankle in 2006 so had about 2 months out afterwards at least.
So far i've never actually injured myself surfing, or not a real injury anyway, although i don't want to tempt fate by saying that!

pulled a muscle in my back but that was gym related, went surfing which antagonised it even more. so no surfing for the moment

No where near as bad as some of you guys, but I screwed my knee (cruciate ligament) up playing football/soccer by kicking the ball at the same time as a a big guy was in the opposite direction.
Couldn't surf for 3 weeks, what did I do? I quit playing football so that it never affects my surfing again!

Didn't do it surfing (did it skateboarding) but broke my ankle and dislocated the foot from it's socket. 8 weeks in plaster, the first 6 weeks without being able to even walk. That pretty much stopped me from surfing for about 6 months and still has limited movement 12 months later.
I've also broken both feet at the same time, broke both wrists (not at the same time), broke my tail bone and missaligned two vertabrae in my spine all skateboarding.
I've also dislocated my left shoulder twice snowboarding and broke a finger in a punch up with a skier (snowboarding related i guess).
I suppose all that's why i started surfing.

Was the broken neck from surfing? Just wondering, I've heard about alot of broken necks resulting from messing around in the shorebreak whether it be surfing, bodyboarding or just goofing off (usually due to shallow sandbars).

Believe it or not it was at Waimea. Seriously. I was living in HI at the time. Now, the rest of the story - it was actually during the summer and we were messing around flipping over the little shorebreak waves, well, I didn't quite flip all the way on one and came straight down on the top of my head in about 2 inches of water. Blew C5 back into my spine and was paralyzed from the neck down for a spell. They choppered me out and patched me up and I'm good as new (well, almost...)
