Surfing Waves

I'm generally comfortable in the 50 degree water around here, with the exception of my hands. So I want to get some new heavy-duty gloves.

I'm considering these ebay gloves, which seem designed for scuba diving instead of surfing. Anyone see any problems in getting these?

I would personally recommend Mitts as opposed to gloves. Sure they wil feel slightly awkward initially but you will wonder why you never got them before. Its like a jaccuzzi for your hands.

In today's world scuba gloves are designed for scuba.. and wetsuit glove are designed for wetsuits... there is a reason for this...

I never figured that mitts would work, that they'd be like a loose wetsuit. I prefer them for skiiing, but that's quite a different situation.

I'm willing to be convinced. Doesn't water accumulate in the mitt?

i use mitts for surfing, very warm. if you get the right side not too much water should build up inside them do they shouldn't feel too heavy although after the summer they do.

Gloves for me, better all round grip and as for the palm grip nothing better.

pretty thick huh? my mitts are 2.5mm and in the north sea get too hot and need to let a little cold water in, although gloves have a different effect.

As far as scuba gloves, wetsuit gloves or Mitts I would guess all of them can help keep your hands warm and good enough to grip the board ok. It would seem that Mitts might actually give you a little more paddling advantage over open fingered gloves as it provides and unbroken surface area (except for the thumb). Never tried them, but it would seem that way to me. Those that have used Mitts before, is my theory true about added paddling ability?

I think it's true what you say Bub, my gloves ceraintly don't stop my paddling or slow it down.

Heavy or thick gloves are bad. They interfere. I found even thin gloves caused problems. When grabbing the rail while catching the wave, I got tremendous drag in the water from gloves. Anyway, go thin. You will probably find that you only need a little insulation to get along in the cold water.

question for you: Where do you surf? Ever been to Caspar Creek or are you north of there? I surfed there on Christmas day 2007. Usually, I surf Dillon Beach, Bolinas, Pacifica, and Pleasure Point (Santa Cruz/Capitola).

I surf mostly in Crescent City, CA. I'm close to the best spot: Camel Rock (near Moonstone), but a shark attack there a month or two ago has me spooked. The attack was exactly where I surf -- often alone. The great white bit the board, pushed the surfer around, then split.

Those places you mentioned are far south from here.

Water temp is between 45 and 50 degrees F in the winter.

You are far north! Your winter water temp is a few degrees cooler than mine. The good thing about these cold temps is that you get used to it and when you go to someplace that is 65F, you don't need a wetsuit. I surfed at Cocoa Beach, FL, in January without suit due to this "trainng" we have. Too bad Caspar Creek in Mendocino is so far south for you because it is pretty and good for beginners. That was the coldest water I'd ever been in. After 3.5 hours I could not feel my feet! Strange as it sounds, this was one of those things that "hurts good."

I'd sure like to try your surfing spots. You should hurry with developing skills so you can be ready when the next tsunami comes through. Hasn't been one since '64, so another should be coming any day.

About that shark attack up there. This reduces your odds tremendously. Go out and surf!

Oh, just found out the last tsunami may have been in 2006.

Personaly i prefer gloves, Ive got 5mm Ripcurl mits they keep your hands total tosty warm but fill wi water and make your arms feel heavy

So i bought some 1.5 mm Excel gloves off Magic sea weed, keep my hands warm enough and i dont even feel like am wereing gloves. If you feel the cold go for the 3mm.

but as some one else said go for surfing make gloves coz they are designed for surfing

I bought some 3 mm O'Neilll surfing gloves over the weekend.

There haven't been any significant tsunamis here since '64. There was one in CC that acted like a big high tide and damaged some docks.

But we did have a guy die at the beach I surf at. Just found him drowned and still leashed. Never figured out what killed him. Waves were not big. No injuries or hypothermia.
