I am doing a study on the surfer community for one of my 3rd year tourism classes, and have a few questions that i hope some will answer.

What motivates you to surf?

Why do you choose certain locations over others to surf?

Why did you start surfing?

What expectations do you have when visiting a new surfing location?

Any other comments about surfing are welcomed.

Although I'm an newbie, I'll do my best to answer.

Motivation: Alright, alright, I'll admit it's a guy! :? But seriously, there's something about surfing that you can't experience with other sports. I fence and dance, but they don't have the same adrenaline rush like surfing does. You're based on solid ground whereas in surfing, you ride something that's moving. It's the unpredictability that's addictive. Besides, there's something bad-ass about being able to do a cutback on the lip of a wave or slice through a pipe.

Location, location, location: Since all I know right now is Taupo Bay, I'm biased. :P

Why did I start: *see first answer*

New location expectations: Right now, that there'll be small enough waves for beginners, like myself, and friendly kiwis to talk their ear off about surfing. Hey, I need all the help I can get! Besides, it's a good way to meet people and enjoy the sport more.

Hope that helps!

big waves

crowd (crowded, aggrovated crowd at pipeline or less crowded more mellow people at sunset beach), distance from house, distance in paddle to reef, currents, chanel location in relation to break, rocks sticking out of water, wave thickness, wave consistency, wind

i was bored and it was too hot to do anything else

nothing really thats what makes it new to me, i only have expectations of places ive been to.. but i wont surf places with small waves or big crowds, for example i have never surfed waikiki my entire life. (small and crowded)

What motivates you to surf?

It's fun

Why do you choose certain locations over others to surf?

quality of the waves

Why did you start surfing?

To get laid more often (didn't work and it was a long time ago)

What expectations do you have when visiting a new surfing location?

Good waves

Any other comments about surfing are welcomed.

I had a seriously stressful few days at work this week, woke up this morning exhausted and in a bad mood, sun was out, headed to the beach, went surfing in 1 to 2 foot perfect peelers, breaking into 6 inches of water, pretty crap waves really, but I felt great, chilled out and happy after an hour.

Surfing is like mogadon, just cheaper.

Fun mostly like the others have said. its a great sport to have time to your self and relax and at other times you can just really push your self. you can go on your own if you want or don't have anyone to go with, as well as in groups etc..and at the end of the day, every surfer surfs to catch a better wave.

I've never really needed motivation to surf. I just WANT to do it, no motivation needed, it's inbred.
Quality of the waves, crowd.
Because I wanted to surf.
To be challenged and to have a good time.

I think every surfer regardless of why they surf should have a little bit of feeling like this. I know I do.

Once you are a surfer....then you surf to get laid by the ocean....no sex, just melding with the force of mother nature, is like a sexual experience. This is what breeds the intense competition while surfing with others. The need to get in the mothers womb.

We are all expressing our love for the power of the female ocean....it is a lust affair we have with her....vying for her attention, and longing to be inside her...I surf to get laid by the planet. I'm not sure why girls surf?
