Surfing Documentary

I'm working on a 10 minute documentary (that will hopefully be pulled out to be a longer, festival-running project) where I know the subject is surfing. However, I'm interested to hear what you would be interested in seeing. Our production team hasn't solidified the actual topic of the film yet, so we're open to suggestions.

So what would you like to see in a surfing documentary?

Something different, something new, something unique, or original? Would you want to see a person's journey from never having experienced anything in surfing to being completely immersed in the culture? Or say, following the lives of an older and young surfer (showing the differences between culture and attitude towards surfing)? Or even scarier - an all Girls surfing roadie! :D

Those are just some ideas - feel free to throw some new ones out. Any help would be extremely appreciated.

I say since you're doing 10 minute, try to specify on one small thing about surfing. But finding one specific topic to talk about for 10 minute is the hardest thing.

Is this to be filmed in NZ?

Have you seen the state of most of the women in NZ?

Easy - email Doug Young - google Pacific Surfari surf school in Christchurch, and see if you can film him towing in at Papatowai, which is in the deep South of the South Island. Incredible scenery, and some seriously heavy surf. You could make a knock out 10 minute movie of that.

Hang 11 - Oo, I feel like that's an important name I need to know. So I'm going to risk like a total newbie and idiot....but who is Doug Young? Hm, that would be hard though considering I'm up in Auckland. It is an option though.

Pkbum - Agreed. Any topics you'd suggest?

there is a documentary series of someone starting as a beginner in ireland called Cois Fairrige. that would take an awful long time to make for just 10 minutes.
some good topics on this site-
Localism (any particularly bad spots in NZ - kinda name&shame)
How a surf board planes.
Surf tourism

or sod the bikinis - Naked surfing!

Hang 11 - I'm starting to really like your idea, though since my knowledge of Doug is relatively fun, I'm trying to figure out what things of him to highlight and show.

*Here's the kicker - the doc. is supposed to be about a local event, issue, or character (which could be Doug) based around the theme of place, identity, and immigration.*

Garbarrage - Good point. It would probably work better as an hour long segment. Ah, localism! That's a good one - hadn't thought of that.

Ha, I doubt the naked surfing would quite go over for educational and festival purposes. But nice try! :P

So I've been finding out. But remember, I'm from land-locked Tennesese - southern USA. We know nothing of surfing. You have to go 3 states over to even get to any ocean!
