Dorky Equipment?

Postby buffs94 » Mon Mar 03, 2008 5:04 am

Hello,
I'm brand new to surfing in SoCal. I use webbed gloves and a skull cap for warmth. My friend today told me that is very "uncool" and everyone in the lineup probably thinks I'm a dork. That can't be true is it? Not that I really care but do people really think webbed gloves are "uncool"?

It's the webbed gloves, especially, that have people thinking you are uncool. I'd venture that rather than, uncool, they are thinking, "KOOK!" Tremendous watermen like Laird Hamilton don't need these things.

Do you have other brand new stuff, too? That makes experienced surfers think the worst about many new surfers.

Very few people wear webbed gloves & usualy if they need the extra paddling - even then its a bit kookish. Think one of the guys who started ripcurl wears em.

Anyhow skull cap = twat hat, unless its realy cold enough to wear dont bother..

I always thought webbed gloves make people look a bit inbred.

I've tried the webbed gloves and, TBH, found they actually put a lot of strain on my shoulders, so ended up not being that useful - but I'm all for 'new' ideas (as you can tell by the company name).

Without a few weird and wonderful 'concepts', then where would we be??

I'm sure some kids thought Jack O'Neill looked 'uncool' in his suit made out of old rubber sheet and I wonder what the 'real surfers' thought about those stupid pointy short boards when they first saw them??

And THREE fins?? Surely REAL watermen only need one??

:)

webbed gloves are useless as a paddle aid anyway. you're only capable of producing x amount of power from your arms anyway. all they do is mae it so you can pull your hands through the wate as fast. maybe good for long distance paddling but useless for a sprint paddle to catch a wave.

who cares what people think if it works for you then great. If somehow a pink wetsuit with pretty flowers would dramatically improve my surfing preformance well youd see a dreadlocked guy wearing a pink wetsuit with pretty flowers in the lineup

Come to think of it, since I got the gloves, my shoulders are killing me! What a good workout though. Thanks to all the respondents.

Hey Buffs,
Here's a couple of local sites where folks are cool and happy to help.
surfingsandiego.com
sufingsd.com
Good forums there, but of course, this is one of the best and you can learn a lot here as well.
Drop me a pm and we can hook up for some rides.

It's easy to say that you don't care what other surfers think, but in reality being respected by fellow surfers does matter. most surf breaks have a pecking order and if you're the kook, you probably won't be getting any waves.

I had to look up what a skull cap was. Not cool even on land regardless of temp!
