WHATS THE BEST SEASON FOR SURFING IN THE UK?

I just started surfing at the begining of the winter and loved the fact that we had decent waves most days but hated the fact that it was bloody freezing!

Just wondering what everyone else thinks now that spring is on it's way. Would you prefer sunshine and smaller waves or fog and frost and huge waves...... also does it work like that? Dont really know what to expect for spring/summer!

Depends where you are really, but if it's like north-west of Ireland where I am, autumn/winter is the best time. Should be good until around April/May, then you'll get the small summer swells until September, before it gets really good again. You'll have the odd good day during summer...you also get all the summer surfers too...winters best though!

I surf at Longsands, Tynemouth, North East. It's been amazing this winter and suprisingly the cold hasnt put me off! Just looking forward to warmer weather but realise the waves might not be as good.....hmmm

in the north east its best in autumn/winter. in the sw or south wales winter is good but hurricane season (september-mid october ish) is when you want to be surfing. having said that the last hurricane season was utter rubbish. dont be put off by the cold its best just to learn to live with it. surfing when theres snow on the ground is quite a cool experience. also makes you sound well hardcore when you tell your non surfing friends.

I think i may have been spoilt with some good waves this winter, most too big for me but great fun trying. Might actually catch a few small ones in the spring/summer...hehehe

Summer sessions can be good as you can stay out for hours...the evening sessions are cool with sunset! Plus cause the waves aren't huge, you dont take a beating when you wipeout! AND no gloves, no hood, no booties...just a light summer wettie! (But you get all that for September & October when the waves get bigger!).

Summers best if you are just starting out, get yourself to Kernow or south Wales in the summer.
Do you live in Wisterea lane ?

im in ireland and i really enjoy summer for the fact that i can get out nearly everyday, as i live an hour from the beach, but my favourite time would be september if theres nice sets, because the sun doesnt set till late, the water is warm(ish) , theres no summer crowds, and the surf can still get great thanks to winter :)

Back on topic...

Autumn is the best season in the UK. Good quality swells coming in, but the water - and sometimes the weather - is still warm. Crowds have thinned out, and you're fit after a summer spent surfing :D 8)

After that you should swap hemispheres obviously

Hurricane season in the Caribbean can produce some nice swell rolling across the Atlantic to us.
