Seriously though, what's big wave surfing all about!?!

No paddling, no pop ups and your board strapped to your feet! Where is the difficulty in that?

Okay, they're big waves but if you have the time and money to practice, it surely must be easier to pick up than traditional surfing!

Am I completely off the mark? Has anyone here tried it?

never tried being towed into waves although i've been wakeboarding. waz quite hard at first but could get up after a couple of goes (not doing any sorta tricks just killing myself).

i suppose it looks easy, although the speed that you're going at and the power of the waves will make it much more difficult. as well as the mind games (thinking of the nerves). imagine hitting a little wind chop and taking a huge wipeout?

although i can't really comment as i've never done it, and don't think i would go out in anything much bigger than solid 8ft.

If you look at a lot of big wave riding, the chop in the face can be bigger than the largest wave most people on here would've surfed. I doubt the straps make a huge difference if you hit a really big double up tbh.

That's the thing, I've never tried it and don't think I ever will get the chance, so I'm probably talking crap!

But if you're not surfing ridiculously heavy waves surely the learning cure would be quicker than actual surfing?

lol, i'm not too sure. getting towed in at that speed would be difficult to stay up, although would be good for doing airs in little (well about 4ft) waves but would probably wreck landing

I think Fred Van Dyke was right back in the day when he suggested that all big wave surfers were latent homosexuals.

Doesn't take anything away from them for what they do, but it does seem pretty convincing that one of the reasons you put it all on the line is because you are a closet uphill gardener, and want to impress other blokes.

gotta admit though, how mad would it be going down a 50ft face (or more), you would have the biggest adrenaline rush ever.

It's like shagging fat chicks IMO - you often wonder what it would be like, but you know it wouldn't be a good idea to try.

If you have ever ridden some larger waves you will realize it is not as easy as it looks. The learning curve is a lot longer to be pulled into a 30 pluse foot face let alone a 50 plus.

Take a fall once and feel the pounding and you will know it is something to be admired.

there both great to ride but you wouldnt tell the lads bout'em!!

on a serious note just watched timmy turners second thought. for anyone who thinks there a hardcore surfer just watch it, it'll give you a whole new perspective on a surfing holiday

I've surfed some pretty good size waves in my time, but if you're talking about REALLY TRULY big waves, like let's say Cortez Bank, I'd probably soil myself before even getting in the water. You're talking tons and tons of water coming down on you, and if it's spitting a lip, you could EASILY get killed. Mushy waves aren't so bad. Just stay in front of the wash, but even a mushy wave, if big enough, can be very, very intimidating.

He does paddle in big waves there too, plus have you seen that one clip of him doing the biggest wave ever ridden, if that was easy I'll eat my surfboard. (the wax smell so nice I can eat it, haha.)

you gotta be a daredevil to do big wave surfing, you can die from it...

I have to agree. Theres hardly any skill, only guts. I've always thought that but no one has ever agreed. I mean theres no tricks or anything.

to be able to overcome fear is the greatest obstacle, if you have any second thoughts at any time trying to take these waves on you can kiss your ass goodbye, because you could be dead...
