got a water cam for christmas!

Postby surfernoob » Fri Jan 04, 2008 8:46 am

got a waterproof camera for christmas and i'm loving it as i've always been a big tradtional photographer. haven't had a chance to get some good shots yet but im looking forward to trying out all the different techniques with this completely new environment. used it on a couple short sessions the last couple days at huntington and been strapping it on my back as i surf, don't even notice it. thought i'd share several photos i got so far, hope to share more as i grow into doing surf photography!

question: how would you guys feel if you were out surfing and some random stranger out in the water started taking photos of you surfing? i'll probably go about it making small conversation but even without. cause i wanna get out and use the cam more but most the times go out alone.

You must have been good last year. I would feel uncomfortable having some stranger taking my pictures. But a warning would be nice, and I'd be more open to it. Just my two cents. Enjoy man!

i'd be fine, it happens a lot with me being soo goood n stuff...only kidding...but i dont mind, i see people taking photos from the beach regularly and i havn't seen anyone in the water for a while with a camera but i'd feel fine, not sure about others, maybe talk to some people, and see how they feel about it (when their in the water)

I have taken pics of surfers in the water and haven't given any warning. But a lot of the times I will wait for them to get out of the water so I can offer them copies. I don't think I would mind if someone did the same.

cool thanks for the replies and those are some big squid!! yea i was thinking of setting up a simple website or blog of the photos and letting those i got shots of know about it . and yea like many of you said i've always wanted photos of myself surfing up close and would be totally stoked if i ran across one online, so thought i'd do the same for others. i've been washing my camera with fresh water after every use, thanks for the reminder =) look forward to posting more photos in the near future.

oh right I forgot to say I would like to have people taking picsof me, just as long as they're not in my way when I'm surfing.

Having been out taking some pics today....

I would say that if you're taking pictures of individuals then its best to ask, but if you're taking photos of a line-up (even if you're focussing on one surfer on a wave) then its fine to just shoot away.

Happens all the time. Just not to me

I would probably tell the guy to send me the photos of me surfing, since I don't have a water proof one; maybe tell the guy only take good shots only.

ahhh thats badass.
You have no idea how jealous I am, to not live down south anymore.. oh well.. couple years I'll be back!

Back on topic though, I am asking my Fiance for a watercam for our 3year Ann, and I am thinking of the $139 GoPro Camera that attaches to your wrist. Seems like a good product.. I don't want anything too amazing as it would just be for fun.. what do you guys think of this one:
