Red eye

Anyone else get really red eyes after surfing?

Anyone know a solution for it?

Fed up with the "demon" look when finished surfing...

i get it extra bad due to wearing lenses, dont think theres much you can do to avoid it

Optrex... the medicated one for conjunctivitis... works bloody wonders!!

I used to use Optrex and medicated eyewash stuff, but an optometrist told me this was a bad idea - after all, the eye is becoming bloodshot for a reason. So now I just put up with it, and try to avoid staring at the sun.

Which, incidentally, has affected my surfing... when Im sitting in the line-up, and a wave is coming, I always spin clockwise. It took me ages to work out why and its due to surfing (mostly, til now) in the southwest UK - so the sun is usually in front of me and to the left. So to avoid the sun, Im sitting slightly 'clockwise' (so the sun is on my back), and so turning right is slightly quicker.

I think this why Im better at lefts too...

Is it not something to do with the urine reacting with the chlorine in the water that makes your eyes sting?

I get the exactly same, and I wear daily disposable lenses. I wouldnt surf using reusable lenses if you paid me as I'd catch some nasty eye infection.

Anyway, the redness goes away the same evening. Aparently, its a lack of oxygen getting to the surface of your eye that causes redness, coupled with irritation from salt water. Problem is you cant take your daily disposables out after surfing if you need to drive back!

I'd take them out as soon as possible afterwards and Optrex will help sooth them. Other than that several pints of Doombar seem to help too!!!

That's in swimming pools! But yeah, in pools, appparently what makes your eye's sting isn't the chlorine, it's Urea Dichloride or sommat... some bi-product of the reaction between piss and chlorine.

i wear my monthlys all the time and ive never had an infection

that being said i have lost a couple which at 30 quid a pair may not be the brightest idea

Around my eyes get sore. I use vaseline
If you use it all over your face it shields it from the cold even though you'll look like a shiney tool.

And that's the same reason I face north when I'm surfing, so I spin counterclockwise. Always.

I get it awful.....you beat me to it on the post actually! I struggle driving back. Don't you love it when you rub your eyes for the first time after a surf?!!! The pain! (will try the Optrex next time)! Nice one.
Tried looking for you on Saturday, I was in from 7.30am, so I reckon I got out as you got in? Great surf though! Got in again at 1(ish).

I have had red eyes for years surfing but found out about Kurtis surf goggles this year from a friend of mine. Made by surfers. Was in Hawaii last week and saw more guys wearing them. Pretty killer and they work awesome. Go to kurtisusa.com - that's where I ordered mine.

Don`t laugh but surfing with swim goggles could be real strange, everything would be green or pink or red and so on. They come in coloured lens.

Yeah swim goggles would be lame - tried them once and they fog like crazy. Wear Kurtis surf goggles now but they don't look like goggles. Look more like sunglasses tho - super flexible and have a leash system.
