Surfing Waves

Just wanted to say a BIG thanks to essex sucks and johnny b for coming down to brighton on friday night. i had a FAB day today! A day to remember! big hugs to both of you . i thought I'd post these pics now as I intend on sleeping all day tomorrow - I'm shattered!

We got up at 5.45am on Saturday and went to the hotpipes, which was flat (well, the waves were about half a foot!) so we travelled along to the marina. After a long walk and much deliberation with an odd man eating a rather large sandwich, we decided to surf it - good decision! It turned out to be great - really powerful waves. Not sure about all that slippy seaweed on the chalk bottom tho

We went to a small typically british little cafe for lunch, where mark proceeded to eat rather alot of sausages this was our post morning surf cuppa



we drove back to the hotpipes and had a short walk along to the harbour wall which has been totally closed off to surfers and they've even put a massive section of rocks right across where the best waves used to be
honestly, i go a way for the summer, come back and find my best breaks RUINED. What's going on? Still, we had a bit of fun and caught a few barrells...

seriously though, I really enjoyed surfing saturday afternoon - nice little waves, and easy to get out to the lineup! We must have been in ages, cuz we didn't get out till it was getting dark.



I rode my 7'2 which I hadn't since about march cuz I've been longboarding. It felt really strange but I'm so stoked that I caught some really nice waves and rediscovered my love for my old board

All in all, a great day with great company thanks guys!

it don't work that often and it only works on bits of the tide if u ar going u need too go with someone who knows the area

The surf was a right laugh (even if it was tiny)! Essex is a demon on his Harmageddon special (better than me now ).

Nice pics! - It's good to see some of the New Beach and the pipes - I used to live right by the coastguard station in the background of the fifth picture.

Am I allowed to stick up a little guide to the spots around there for you guys?

There's some OK places to surf around that stretch of coast - you just need to know what tides/conditions they work on.

yeah tides are a pig there we did get a good ses in in the morow at the maira but the tides where ALL WRONGE so the evening was not all that becuse there was not that much swell but yeah mate i would love too know what u know about the area.

Here you go:

West Wittering - high tide in a clean groundswell, if it's a small one in Brighton, usually bigger there. Offshore NW- NE

East Wittering - Gets nice, most tides except high - if there's a small groundie in Brighton, then gets bigger there. Offshore NW - NE

Bracklesham Bay - OK at low tide on a groundie. Offshore NW - NE

Littlehampton West Beach - High tide, magnifies any little groundswell, go up the side of the pier. Great wave, total sh1t fight when it's on. Offshore NW-NE

Littlehampton East Beach - Gets punchie on a groundie or cleaned up windswell, most tides, offshore NW-NE

Worthing - End of King George V Avenue - Works on a groundie, mid to high tide, nice rights off the groyne by the cafe, offshore NW - NE

Shoreham Beach, by Beach Green, fun at mid tide on a groundswell or cleaned up windswell. Shore dump is a great laugh at high tide on an old board. Offshore NW-NE

Shoreham Harbour - Hollows, on the West side, inside the main harbour wall, by the old fort - low tide on a 6.0+ tide, in a solid SW storm, gets a great little wave, wind blows offshore/no wind. Crap at any other tide, or if it's not big tides.

Shoreham Harbour - Soldiers Point - mid to low, tide, either on the push or drop, nice wave up the side of the western inner harrbour wall.

Shoreham Harbour - Eastern side, up the side of the outer harbour wall, good on most storms except dead southerly, works most tides, apart from high tide.

New Beach, AKA Bumholes - outside the Eastern Harbour wall, gets nice on a SW or W storm with protection, mid to low tide, has the odd moment of glory, but usually fat pop up peaks.

Hotpipes - Mid to low tide, offshore on a NW - NE, works with windswell and moderate onshores, OK on a groundie. Best days there are when a big SW storm comes in and the wind goes NW as the low pressure moves over. If it coincides with the right tide, it can get pretty good. Best on the outgoing tide.

West Pier - low tide on a groundie or cleaned up windswell. Fickle but can get really nice sometimes.

Marina - chalk reef (where Custard Point got the name from) - most tides, solid waves in a SW or W storm. Friendly locals

Cairos - Reef break a few miles East of the Marina just past Peacehaven. Walk down the cliff path from Cairo Ave. Nice on a clean swell, high tide is best if it's big. Gets quite solid on the odd day. Offshore NW - NE

Spot x - keep going East, walk along the cliffs and find it, breaks on really specific conditions, real good right point. If you get to Eastbourne, you missed it. You have to climb down/up the cliffs to get access, so you need to be fit. Not saying any more.

Have fun. You need to be clued up to what the wind is doing by the hour to luck into decent waves - just keep an eye open for a SW - NW switch as a low goes over, or the winds to drop as the centre of a low comes down the South Coast.

Groundswells for the South Coast down that way are easy enough to pick - you need a big low in Bisay to do it. If Cornwall is over 6 ft from the W or Sw, then there should be something up the South Coast a few hours or a day later.

Bracklesham is better as the tide pushes in medium to high tide. The wave height doubles as it hits the stones. I hardly bother with low tide unless it is going off.
