Irish surfer information

Hi orilestone1, welcome to Surfing Waves.

The bigger the better is the general rule when considering a beginners surfboard. A bigger board helps you catch the waves easier and also gives you more stablility.
If you don't want to start on a longboard you may want to consider a minimal - smaller than a longboard but a good board for a learner. As for Kierans question - do you want a glass board or a pop-out. (If you don't know the difference give a shout and we'll clarify for you)
A pop-out is the better board for the beginner because of their sixe and construction.
It has been said elsewhere in this forum but I'll say it again - why not hire a board that you think will be suitable. Ask in the shop for a board to suit your standard and do not be economical with the truth. Once you have tried a board or two you should have a better idea of what you are after.
There are other posts in this forum about beginners surfing equipment that you should have a read of.
Are you thinking new or second hand?

Your first shortboard

If you have definately decided on a shortboard then you are going to need one that is at least 6'6'', at least 19 1/2'' wide and at least 2 1/2'' thick.
Don't be tempted to get anything smaller because it looks nice - you will find that your surfing will surrfer for it.
Of course it is possible to learn on a shortboard, make thinks easy on yourself by getting into the water as much as possible. Should'nt be too much to ask in Ireland - always plenty of waves.
