Surfing Waves

Hey everyone,

How are everybody's feelings towards sustainable surfboards? In particular the Eco Board which was developed in accordance with the Eden Project.

Has anybody tried to create a 100% organic and sustainable surfboard before?

Some experimental ones, yes.

It isn't really proven technology yet tho.

A big part of the problem is the resins and matrixes used in the surface (e.g., fiberglass and polyester resin).

Some of the wooden surfboard builders are getting very close.

And some of the compsand surfboards are close to carbon neutral and recyclable.

i recycle which is really unusual in hawaii, most dont, but i would not spend extra money on a planet friendly surfboard over its fiberglass equivalent.

Even though the natural environment is relied on by us to provide us with the waves we ride! isn't that a good enough reason to protect and preserve the environment itself?

Some would. Some wouldn't.

Mark from Compsand posted one of his boards on ebay.co.uk (see the Compsand Fish thread). Absolutely gorgeous fish! It'll outlash any 5 (or 10) poly boards. And it's not too far off carbon neutral.

But most people on this forum seemed to think it was overpriced at 550 pounds. I can't help wondering how many poly boards they reckon they could buy for 550 pounds

hell no. that kind of crap is for rich, smug, white upper class

id rather spend time decreasing my food mile consumption or going through trash and recycling the stuff everyone here throws away. but even that, when it comes down to it, none of this matters to th earth. were just speeding up its natural cycles.

the glaciers will melt, we cant stop them, this will mess up the ocean currents, and maybe we will be thrown into another ice age, which the earth cycles in and out of, so what? its recycling itself. the human population will be dramatically reduced and specieswill die and the earth will be back to normal.

the thing you guys dont get is that all this environmental stuff is for us, not the earth. seriously, 2 degrees??? who gives a xxxxx? not the planet, only humans. spend your time ending hunger or something more worth while, after all, were f--ked either way, so we should help everyone enjoy their time here while they can. id rather drive an old shitmobile and send money poor africans than buy a hybrid and be all pretentious

im not saying im not privledged, but it sure is nice to be able to ponder about the environment and poo-poo countries like china (which has decreased its hunger/starvation by 2/3 because of industrialization, and hence the pollution)

i say you were pretty ticked off that al gore got a nobel prize

so if you do care about the environment and recycle, decreasing your food miles, that could also be seen as pretentious in your eyes. how can owning an organic surfboard be pretentious anyway, if you already care about saving the environment. i thought pretentious meant, trying to be something you're not!
And i'm not saying that buying a sustainable/organic surfboard will change the world, it's one of the small differences we should change and adopt to. Eventually all these small differences and changes will lead to a big change. We need to make being green a way of life and habit not an option to make ourselves more pretentious.

recycling and eating locally grown foods saves me money, not cost twice as much for the sme thing. i didnt mean to discourage you, i just think that money would be better pent in other ways if you want to do something good for the world.
