Hello everyone, i'm brand new to the fourms and I got a question that has been on my mind for quite some time. First off I would just like to tell u a little bit about myslef. I've wanted to surf as long as I could remember(sounds corny as hell but true) but I got a huge problem.

I live smack dab in the middle of the states 6+ hours from any coast. I'm graduating highschool this year and will probably be moving outa my rents house. I'm proabaly going to be going to college but not before I take some time off and try some surfing first; that and find out what I want to do with my life  .

Any way the one place i've always wanted to live in is Hawaii. Oahu to be excact. I just want to know if its even financially possilble to live there for an 18 year old. I know this sounds like a pipe dream but its something I really want to do. I have been saving up money for this for a while and im sure if it means me getting outa the house my rents would help me with some of the cost. Is it actualy possible to get a small one bedroom apt, cheap car, and a job and be able to afford it?

Please try not to just laugh at this post :? . I would really appriciate some constructive feedback. Thanks for helping out guys.

Well I have never been to hawaii, but there are some people that have done some longish trips there, and atleast one that lives there on this board.

My understanding is that it is really expensive. So make sure you got a few grand before you go out so you dont NEED to get a job right away to eat. It would be better to have atleast 2-3 months worth of expenses atleast so you can spend your time getting the best job possible.

My suggestion would be to apply to U of Hawaii, and start there in the fall. You can apply for financial aid, work part time and probably be able to survive there.

hawaiis cost of living his higher than any other state. we got tons of people living on the beach homeless. not lazy people...but unlucky people. yeah so unless ur living with someone you know, or going to UH and working part time there...it would be very hard.

San Diego is one of my favorite places... great weather.. great beaches.. over all great atmosphere...

it's really expensive to live there, but "do-able". i met loads of young'uns (18/19yr olds) in the process of getting houseshares together and going to the uni there. they seemed to be able to afford it ok (with part time jobs on top of uni). from what i saw, one bed apartments started around $1200 a month (but I guess it depends on the area you're looking at)

There were a group of germans and a group of australians i met who both ended up with houseshares which worked out around $600 a month each (5/6 sharing a house)... but they had to go quite far out, away from touristy areas & the beach.

I TOTALLY recommend going - live the dream, it's an amazing place. Life's short. make the most of it. The weather's great, the people are great, the surf is great, the atmosphere's great... I could go on forever. It's a really special place. If you do go, you'll never want to leave. Maybe you could go to the uni there and stay a few years?

I miss it all sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much. Still figuring out whether to abandon my life here and go back, or whether to go back for a few more months to make up my mind... at the moment I'm thinking of going over again for 2 months before I make a final decision... but I keep changing my mind each week. Working hard and saving up as much as I can so that I can keep my options open a bit.

I think it'd be worth sharing a one bedroom with 3 guys to live in Hawaii.

I don't think it's much higher than california, at least the most populated areas of Cali, like San Francisco area and pretty much all of coastal Southern California. I live in Orange county and visit hawaii on a somewhat regular basis and prices are very similar to here.

I have a friend who moved to the north shore at 17.

Find a nice little place by the beach and get 2-3 roomates.
