Any way to convince my dad...

...that there are no frickin .5" thick life vests made for surfing? Otherwise, without one, and can't go further out than my lower chest and I/'m about 5' 9"/5' 11". This is extremely, extremely, extremely, extremely GAY!!!!

A regular wetsuit gives you added buoyancy and don't forget you will have a big floatation device strapped to your leg!

Ya, but my dad doesn't want a bouyancy aid, he wants a flotation vest., He says if I get his in the head and I get knocked unconcious, I'll drown cuz I won't go to the top.

hmmmmmm this is a tough one. well me and my friends have gotten hit in the head many times and we were fine. there was no swelling or anything. anyway your chances of getting hit in the head are minimal b/c the white wash pushes the board in front of you. it would take some pretty big surf to knock you unconsious. like 9 ft maybe. also when you get hit in the head it is usually b/c you were swimming back up to the top and you hit your head on your board.

Tell your Dad if your're out surfing in the real ocean you're much less likely to come to harm than when you're talking to nasty ole men in internet chat-rooms.

LOL !!!

Tell him if he won't let you surf for that reason then tell him that he cannot drive, eat meat, walk across the road, or anything like that cause you have just as much of a chance to die if not more doing that stuff.

Your dad sounds like a woman. Kick him in the nads and run out in the ocean (joking by the way).

i had this probalem when i was starting to surf. my dad is a reasonable man so when i gave him some of these reasons he let me go. but you pretty much have to tell him that surfing is not dangerous and youll be fine and no matter what he says you still gonna go anyways :D

Wow quick surfer is now 23 instead of 13 after this resurrection. probably able to make up his own mind about his equipment.
Now the real question, if you are doing tow in surfing there are vests of this sort, and a back up on a ski.
In normal surfing you don't want increased personal buoyancy You would not be able to duck dive or penetrate the waves face in a wipeout.
Helmet if needed, :D

What Jaffa said immediately above. Plus, you could get yanked from the board when paddling out against breaking waves or when paddling to catch a rough wave. Then you could get hurt or hurt someone else because you lost control of your board. Board control is rule #1.
