Surfing Waves

Hello there!

Now this is quite a serious question for me... Does this debilitating obsession with surfing which i have recently been hit with ever end?

I've only been out a few times but already I cant think of anything else... I can't concentrate on work properly, My head is almost always out the window checking the Brighton surf (make that non-existent surf), My girlfriend is getting crazy with me trying to rope her in to it... I even had a near miss on my Vespa yesterday after zoning out wondering if Croyde would have any waves next weekend...

Does this happen to everyone and has my life been invaded for good or will it all mellow a bit to allow me to function properly again?

On a lighter note has anyone else had any near misses whilst day dreaming about surf?

No it never ends and flat spells like we're experiencing at the moment get you more and more wound up!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh. Your lucky your not obssesed with the wind too.

Actually kite surfing had crossed my mind to get over the lack of surf... i felt a bit thick when i realised that there hasn't been any wind either...

I'm not even going to think about that... i don't need anything else to torture myself with...

Its crazzy! my life has totaly changed since i started surfing a year ago
and is as Kity says no waves makes you crave for it even more.

I hope that east coast swell holds for the weekend. I need to get wet

Nope. It doesn't go.

I learned to surf one summer 4 or 5 years ago. Didn't surf again for about a year and a half afterwards but I never forgot it, I dreamed about it all the time and that's what made me pick it up again, 2 years after I first started.

And I'm still as obssesed now as ever. Constantly thinking about it, talking about it etc.

40 years and I'd rather be with my board than any woman I've ever known. Not that I'm trying to brag, but I've been with plenty, and some very beautiful ones to boot.

You can be in love with a woman, but you can get addicted to your surfboard. Most women have a hard time with this fact. I've lost /dropped plenty of lady friends because they couldn't hang with my surfing, they thought I was obsessive about it... Where's the damn laughing smiley when you need it!

thats what is so damn great about the 'sport'

flat spells are killer, but you find yourself really excited when new swelll is on its way.... (Monday!!!)

Been surfing for over 35 years and the stoke is still there. It will never end until you die if your lucky.

It never goes away, you might get a bit more picky over conditions, but that feeling of seeing great waves, and knowing how much fun you're about to have never goes away.

Otter - I've rooted quite a few munters over the years, but I've also ridden lots of small, blown out days. I have low standards......

LOL! Yeah, my standards weren't always of the highest calibre, you know the old saying, at midnight the dogs look good, at 2:00a.m. the cleaning lady seems beautiful...

I loved surfing a lot when I first started, but I actually loved it even more once I got better enough to know how much I sucked. My g/f surfs with me, and if she didn't it wouldn't work. Best g/f ever, just got me a new Merrick.

Absolutely with you!! Only been surfing a mere two months, but already have a shortboard 6'8 and minimal 7'10 (and can get up/turn on both). Strandhill was mega yesterday evening (constant, clean, no wind)...probably too big for me, but I went in anyway! A real job getting out to the big waves, but the 5 waves I got were the best so far for me!!

I sure hope not.

I'm taking my girl down to Croyde next weekend to get some surfing lessons and i sure as hell hope she loves it!

not only will it save our relationship and make make her a surfer girl (and who doesn't love a surfer girl!) but if she loves it I have in mind to suggest that we go halves on a VW Camper to get to the surf in style... that would just be genius!

I'm just hoping that once this flat spell is over (fingers and toes crossed for next week) ill be able to concentrate when I'm at work again... id be OK if I was working for someone else but I'm running my own little business its certainly suffering at the moment

I wonder what it is about surfing that makes it this way? It really is an addiction; it fills your thoughts when you are without it and gives you an almighty high when you are doing it. There is nothing like the the feeling of anticipation when heading out for a surf, then that first glimpse of the conditions and if it looks good, boy does it get your pulse racing and yer heart fluttering. This is my experience of it so far anyway.

P.S. Does anyone else have surfing dreams fairly often?

I just like dressing up in rubber.

I had a 'stress dream' the other night about surfing - perfect conditions, and there was a pro coming out with us, and everybody (Phil, Gwyn, Chris, James, a few others) were all piling into the water, but I couldnt work out the fins on my board and kept putting mismatched fins in

I woke up like I was having a nightmare, hell I was having a nightmare!

the worst thing for me is, i went and bought a board about a week or so ago and i still can't really use it as there is NO SURF

i can't stop checking the pressure charts and stuff......
