Surfing Art

I'm currently working on a series of illustration with surfing as the focus. There's going to be 5 seperate pieces (2 vertical and 3 horizontally-composed so it'll look a little something like this....

! - - - !

The first piece would be of a surfer (probably from a back view) with his board looking out to the ocean.

The last piece would be more focused on the ocean at the end of the day (sunset) with the surfer walking away after a succesful day of surfing.

However I can't think of what to do for the other three pieces. I know one of them would be an actual surfing picture, but the other two elude me. What do you guys think would be best to go there (It's sequential)? Or what aspect of surfing would you like to see illustrated?

A close up view of a hand, waxing the board, with the sea in the distance behind?

A small crew sitting in the line up?

Riding the wave / a barrel?

Yeah there's too much glamorisation of surfing nowadays!

Represent the true image of surfing Bri;

Getting changed and dropping the towel just as some old ladies go passed.
Vomiting in the lineup due to too much vodka the night before.
Sitting in your flat with nothing to do cos it's flat.
etc

All these are good ideas and I give you my permission to use them!

Real Pol - Oh that just made me laugh out loud in the library. Those might be a good idea for a comic strip!

I came up with two other concepts...

1. A view from under the water as the surfer has just ducked.
2. Surfer waiting for the wave (in somewhat calm waters)

I'm definitely set with the idea of sticking with one surfer as the subject (though, Jonah_Fro, I did like the idea of the surf crew at the lineup).

Bluesnowcone - Got it! :D

Drowningbitbybit - That would be interesting.....

i really liked the idea of people sitting in the lineup. from my point of view i love going surfing when theres no one else around with a bunch of mates. if we are just sitting there we are usually laughing or taking the mick out of each other (yuck! that sounds well cheesy!). so i think the line up bit would show the social/fun side of surfing. if that makes sense!

no offence but that sounds so typical. of course i grew up in hawaii where everyones familiar w/ surf culture. i think you should focus on what surfing means to you. if it means hours drive in a car, then draw that, or maybe draw something that shows what it feels like to get smashed by a wave, abstract

Well, the problem I haven't surfed...yet. Hopefully I will be in October, but that's up in the air. I do want to lean more towards the "typical" to begin with. Doing a series of works is a new venture to me (though drawing, however, is not). So for the moment I do want to stick with more known aspects of surfing then work my way up to more specific pieces.

To give you an idea, here's a page of my artwork as it stands now...
