So is sex now a sport or just practicing a sport???? What about when I'm cleaning the house??? Or cooking???? Or running after my kids ,I think were all knowing that surfing is a sporting activity and can for sure be called a sport in competition standards and hmmmm I even think they sell surfing stuff at SPORTING GOOD STORES !!!!

By some standards I'm a sporting guru in more things than I ever thought and by outher standards I'm a non sporting type in many of the things I do.

I'm more confused now than when I started :?

I think Lomax is completely right here. Sure, surfing stuff can be sold in 'sporting goods stores' but that doesn't necessarily categorise it as a sport. If you're from the UK (not sure about anywhere else), you'll understand me when i say that a lot of the chain store sports shops around here don't actually sell a lot of sports equipment. It's all about catering for the chav market i think....
Anyway, as Lomax said, kicking around a ball cannot be described as a sport surely?! But then use that ball to play football with other players then that is a sport.
Parrysurf, when your kids play football they ARE playing a sport! It doesn't matter how skilled the players are, or how major the game - whether it's in your back garden or at wembley...

Can we not settle this by just agreeing that surfing is a sport to some and not to others?? Surfing will always be surfing, whether we call it a sport or not. I'm sure there are better things to be occupying our minds with right now....surfing maybe??

True words.....but I can't let it die....sorry....hear me out last time...promise.

If you are watching a physical activity and you can tell what the individual or group is doing because it is taking place on a field of play or set of activities make obvious the nature of the group. It is a sport.

This explanation of sport explains all questions....I have seen the light!!

So driving your car is not a sport but nascar is...this is apparent by the field of play and the obvious set of rules.

Running to the bus is not a sport....running a race is. again apparent by field of play and rules.

Paddling for exercise is not a sport...paddle for time and it is a sport.

Poker has a field of play, set of rules and it is obvious to others you are engaged in this activity....yet the activity is not physical in nature, yes you do have to move to play, but you can play the same game on the computer, so it is a game.

Soccer is a sport, practicing for a game is a sport. Kicking the ball against a wall or with a friend is not a sport.

All are holding to the definition......

Surfing....hmmmm.......field of play...check....set of rules.... check....if you are watching the activity is the goal of the participants and field of play apparent and similar in nature???....check....can it be done in competition even if for wave count???....check...can it be an activity???...check

To some, surfing is a sport. To some, you get "points" for "moves".

I personally believe that it shouldn't be competitive and it takes the spirituality out of the dance between the surfer and the ocean through wave energy and a board.

who isn't just a little competitive with mates?

not the be all and end all but i'd be lying if i said i didn't feel just a little smug if i've had a better sesh than my mates. for sure i've to put up with semi-gloating when the shoe is on the other foot.

not that i'm not happy when my mates are doing well out there... but always gonna find it funny calling them on to close-outs.
