A couple interesting things to note here. One is she is riding a wavestorm initially without a leash and ditches her board. It looks like she was going to try to do a stand up and go through the wave but changes her mind and tries to kick the board over the foam. But I bet there was no one inside of her that the board might hit. The other thing is she is a fantastic surfer (and beautiful)

It's interesting to see the "aqua-maniacs" starting at 4:17. It looks like they got into the habit of going prone when they made it to the trough. I figure that was how you surfed with an unleashed board. It's also probably easier to control an almost rockerless board in chunky white water if you go prone, shift your center of gravity back far enough so the nose of the board lifts up, and keep the board from pearling and in your hands. Board control was a lot more complicated in the days before the surf leash. I suppose in the days before more rockered surfboards, a surfer had to manually control the level of the board's nose with back foot pressure on the tail. If you didn't move back quick enough to lift the board's nose, you were headed for the drink.
