I work in a hotel so I get locked in with the family and the guests...we are allowed to use lights and move around inside the resort so long as we use blackout curtains on our room.....I've gotten a ton of paperwork done today as a shut in; no distractions other than peeking here every now and again....

I did take some time with my daughters in the pools this afternoon......not really the full Balinese experience that occurs outside the walls, but we did get to see the ogoh2 parades yesterday before coming in.

Just went for a walk around the property....amazing how many stars come out when the entire island is blacked out. For those who don't know about Nyepi and are curious:

I like your average surfer videos. I think that was more than a head dip it was a whole body dip much more impressive than a head dip. Here is average surf in Indiana
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Talking of getting barrelled in small waves, check this out (need to wait right to the end for the full barrel). In about waist high waves

If I need to crouch down I need to do a drop knee so I practice doing various drop knee stances for just such situations (it's part of my morning stretches). Used to be I could crouch real low but now it gets my knees. I have only done it on back door tube rides or rather attempts at it since I never got covered completely. Front side I have only done it because I got hit by the lip on popup but it did make it so I could grab rail. If you notice the surfer is doing a drop knee stance.

That is an interesting clip. I think that is Jamie O Brien who is a regular footed surfer taking off switch (goofy) stance in a drop knee stance then switching to his regular stance. He is an amazing surfer.

I put together one from a rare spot that only breaks in winters with a lot of rain like this one. It's the Santa Cruz Harbor.

Surfline Shaper's Roundtable

I enjoyed this.

Published on Nov 7, 2015

A conversation about surfboards, with Eric Arakawa, Matt Biolos, Darren Handley, Britt Merrick, and Rusty Preisendorfer.

It could be something about the solitary nature of their work, but it’s a well-established fact that shapers – much like surf photographers -- love to talk. Waves, trips, contests – but especially about all the nuances around building surfboards. If you ever want to learn more than you ever thought possible about that piece of foam and fiberglass you ride every day, show up at your local shaper’s place with a 12-pack some afternoon and sit back and listen.

We didn’t have a 12-pack – hey, it was early – but we did just assemble five of the world’s best shapers into one room and sat ‘em around a table with glasses of water. And as usual with this roundtable format, it’s not like a one-on-one interview format: we step in with a question/topic and get the heck out of the way.

Sometimes, as they do, things drift off into the ether. Other times, ideas we never thought of sprout up organically and everyone gets really excited.

One of the few pro surfers I met, Booby Jones was filmed doing a maneuver where he fell backwards off the board but kept his feet on the board and pushed himself back up to his feet. This short clip doesn't show that but it does show how courageous he was in big waves. Sadly when I think of him all I can recall is that I briefly met him and he did that maneuver which I attempted to do numerous times but only succeded a couple times
