So what if a girlfriend is second best after surfing. I'd be the exact same. The waves are only perfect on a rare occasion and when that happens nothing else matters.

It always seems that I must choose waves or the woman I dont seem to be able to have both at the same time.

yeh i know, but Tom Delonge's hair is extremely typical of emo guys. i like the whole style to be honest, i like the music, i like the hair i like the clothes, if it fits for you then i think it's awesome, can't stand people jipping emo, if people like it then let them wear it, even though technically emo is music not a style! not getting at you 'guest' i just saying, lol.

no im not disagreeing, tom delonges hair is emo ish, but i was just givin a proper type if you get me, yes i like emo too, i was not jipping it as you say. Music turns into a style, moshers punks etc all come from a background of music, emo is just another one , but a great one

I like good old fashion punk rock, i also listen to hardcore just because there arnt many good punk bands around anymore. I still look respectable..i dont have a pink hawk, i dont...ehh actually i do run around saying fck you all the time but atleast i know its trashy. but i look respectable is what im trying to say...dress like yourself not your scene

Emo is better than gangsta tho cuz atleast they dress what they are pu**ies, gangstas try to look hard all the time...and i enjoy "stepping to them" because they think they kno how to defend themselves

guys I really dont understand how people can be so prejudice and judgemental just based on what someone wears or what music they listen to!? Now I live no-where near the coast, but i've made it down there whenever possible since I was about 12 and learnt to surf that way. I guess if a label is going to put over my head in terms of the way I dress then it would be as a 'surfer', but I still get labelled as a poser and a wannabe before people even get the chance to know what i'm all about. Even though i would be wearing these clothes no matter where i lived of what my hobbies were. There are people on here who say they hate posers and there was one post saying that 'people who look the part generally arent the real thing'. Now i guess i'm lucky that I earn my living modelling whilst I study at uni, but i dont see why just because I 'look the part' i should get judged as a poser and a fake. I've spent years travelling 6 hours to the coast at every possible chance to try to get better at the sport I love, but when i get ripped to shreds about the way I look it just makes me wonder why the hell I do it. Surely this whole scene is about catching waves and being yourself. There are far too many people who spend more time in the water judging others that they forget what they are really in the water for....

Im from western australia im sponcered for surfing and i play in a punk/emo band, i have blonde hair based on tom delongs style...i aint got ne girl friends...just lots of girls who are my friends...so explain that

Wow..reading this thread..the things young people go through these days & how image concious they are. For me the very coolest thing a surfer can do is not draw attention to himself out of the water. Why subscribe to an image & attempt the "look". It's such hard work.

Let me remind you also, Billabong, Rip Curl, Volcom, OP and almost every surf brand I can think of all manfacture their clothing ranges in Asia, they are made & sewn in mini tax-haven sweat-shops within these countries staffed by under paid, over worked teenagers just like yourself. These kids work upwards of 14-16 plus hours per day for 1-2 dollars per day. Yep, just so you can have cheap, poorly made, disposable surf label clothing.

Read up on globalisation, authors like Naomi Klein. Learn what youre really buying in the quest for your image...

thats some deep thinkin how much is 2-3 dollars in pounds? its like the poor kids who stitch leather balls and get payed 50p a day and work all day and these are the balls used in the world cup no one gives the poor kid makin the ball any attention just the multi million pound corparations cashing in on third world countries cheap labour,its the same with everythin thes days though innit how many things say made in taiwain?evn so some things made in say asia that are then shipped over to say england and then is assembled in england it can say by law that it is made in england ,so spare a thought for thes sweat shops while your slipping on your new surfbranded clothes.

No, not really deep thinking.
It's just than in recent years I've started seeing "made in Thailand" or similar on almost every article of surfing or sports related clothing I've bought…and I wanted to know why those things are made there rather than in our own countries…I did some reading…and it's really disturbing stuff. Young people who desire & buy this type of clothing (rip curl jeans, volcom teeshirts etc etc) really should know what they're buying & who made them…

This is what happens.
American owned companies with similar products (like Rip Curl & Billabong) group together and approach a struggling third-world country, they'll target one that's really poor with massive unemployment & little chances of improving their standard of living. These groups go to the leaders of these countries & say "we want to set up a manufacturing facility in your country to make our jeans & tee-shirts and we'll employ 10,000 of your citizens". Of course these third-world countries say yes…they are desperate for any business they can attract.

As part of the set-up negotiations that take place these groups, knowing they're dealing with a desperate country usually insist on a deal like "since we're giving you all these jobs you let us set up & operate tax-free in your country for the first two years then we'll see how it goes?", or "let us operate tax-free in your country and you may get a free trade deal with our rich country"…the desperate countries have little choice but to accept the deal offered.

These multi-nationals then build massive pre-fabricated warehouses & compounds with fenced perimeters near the slum neighborhoods to ensure a ready supply of desperate workers. They then employ mostly young teenage females - they do not complain, do not group together and form unions and they accept whatever they're paid. These children then work 14-16 plus hours a day in unventilated, crowded, unhealthy sweatshops, working 6-7 days a week for little money, no lunch breaks, no holidays or any form of worker benefits. If you did that in a western country it would be called slave labour & exploiting children.

When the two year tax-free period is almost done, the companies, itching to continue operating without paying any tax negotiate hard to stay…if the country is smart it'll realise it's being ripped off & it's citizens are working for almost nothing and the local economy is not receiving any taxes and really…they're better off without them.
When the arrangement finally falls to bits & the country realises it's being exploited, the whole pre-fabricated warehouse is pulled down (it was prefabricated for this very purpose when first built) and then the whole operation moves on to the next poor desperate third work country…..and the exploitation continues.
This is why you see many clothes coming from one particular area of the globe for several years…then the labels change from "made in Korea" to "made in Thailland".

Whenever you seen those really ugly violent "anti-globalization" protests on T.V and protests outside Free Trade & G-7 Conferences…this is the very subject they're protesting about.

After reading up on the subject...I now can't walk past a rack of Rip Curl or Billabong clothes in a surf shop without imagining the poor, desperate, hungry, tired children who made them……you should think before you buy this crap.

no matter what clothes you wear your gonna be judged, i cant belive your bashing people for wearing surf clothes, i mean come on look at what they have done alot for surfing with the comps and sponsered events

i dont belive in swaet shops but alot of companys have to move to other countries to be able to compete in a world market, if you can prove to me that surf brands are using sweat shops ill stop buying there clothes but at the moment i can find no real evedence to back that up on the internet
