In what way is his stuff a 'new genre'???

I own the obligatory one JJ CD for when its the right moment - but it is too bland to listen to the whole thing. If an electric guitar and drums kicked in towards the end of 'Good People' and played a big rock finish I'd listen to it far more often

What I mean is that, if anyone does this laid back type of music and lazy low end vocals, they'll be compared to Jack Johnson. Take Donovan F. for instance. Since JJ came to the forefront first, DF will forever be in his shadows. Well, he should just stop touring with him altogether to stand apart.

check out nick drake man. hes been dead for some time now so if i heard someone say he sounded like jack, i would bitch slap that fool, and say "jack johnson souns liike nick drake, son" there is also elliott smith and a bunch of others before jack.

jack is influenced by nick drake, it says so on his myspace. or used to when i went to it 6 months ago.

i know ive said this before but im a show off. i saw jack johnson outback at sharks cove on the north shore.

also andrew bird is great.
the sea and cake
BOB DYLAN
devendra banhart
nico

i could go on and on. there are so many lazy low end, laid back vocal styles with acoustic guitars out there. before jack.

i think jack johnsons songs are very repetitive. its catchy but he repeats the same few chords over and over and all his songs sound almost the same.

edit:

It may have been the wrong time/place but I listened to a Jack Johnson song all the way thru for the first time last night - I got very bored after about a minute.

Jack Johnson 's stuff you can find suprisingly, at the abercrombie sister store Hollister, and most bigger surf shops should have his stuff, that is if its not sold out, I'm from North Carolina and its surfing tradition to listen to Jack to get stoked. Af far as creating a new genre i dont think it so. He falls in with O.A.R., Dispatch, Ben Harper, and the people aroung here call it coffe house music. But he is a really amazing person he works with Dave Kaplan of surfdog records to earn money for the surfriders foundation, and his friends include Rob machado, Kelly slater and the like, so he is definantly established.

I'm definitely going to check out some of the bands you guys have mentioned. I gotta say, I love listening to Jack Johnson's music, I find it really helps me chill out. I like all sorts of music mind you. Sure, he didn't create a new genre, and his songs do sound simmilar to each other, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.

I put on JJ if I'm haing trouble sleeping....seems to do the trick! lol!

I like my music a bit heavier 'p.o.d' etc however if he puts surfing to the world in a positive way that can only be good 8)

Status Quo seem to have done o.k only knowing 3 chords! lol!

Think I've got all of his albums but never really listen to them as its not really my kind of music ,too mellow. I dig them out when the mood is right tho.
I can see why he is so popular, its really easily accessable music in that I know several people who aren't really 'into music' that dig his stuff, and its just so inoffensive that most couldn't help but find it 'pleasent'.
Me, I'm just not really into 'pleasent' music tho  .

Jack is great. Been to concerts 2 times and he's really good life. I mean he doesn't really make big show or so, but he sings just like on the CD. At the first concert in Germany, there was Donavan Frankenreiter with him, awesome surfer and singer ! The second time it was Matt Costa, pretty cool as well. He should have a 2 years break now, no new songs or movies... Time for the 2nd baby and surfing.
My all time favourite songs stays Flake...

I just got into Matt Costa a few months ago. Fantastic artist.

Jack Johnson's music may be on the 'simple' side, but I personally am a big fan. I think he does a fantastic job of telling stories and getting across a laid-back mellow vibe that generally can't help but make you feel good. I've really been digging the stuff from the Thicker Than Water soundtrack.
