you cant destroy the soul of anything ! .. those that abide by the traditions of fun, decency and all the common sense unwritten laws etc of surfing will have and will show real "soul " wether they are a beginner or not has no relevance in my opinion...

if they do not display any of the above ... then no worries they will probably fade away as in many other communities, leaving more space for new "souls " or more wannabes to give it a go ..

we've got enough ocean on this lovely planet for all ..what i think is needed are more socialy skilled lifeguards so as to police the soul-less ones a bit more effieciently than at present !! ..

only my opinion but i beleive the "soul" part of surfing comes from your kinship with the ocean .. it is your spirit that is up on that board playing aroun 8)

I can't see the point in these "posers" that paddle out and attempt to surf.

Because they either go out on a board like 5'11" and can barely paddle and look like an idiot, or they go out on a foamie and look like an idiot playing in the whitewash!! :?

I have nothing against people learning to surf if they are going to take it up..but I hate posers!

yes surfing is becoming increasingly easy to get into. yes there are lots of posers in the water. but does this mean its not an extreme sport?

i think not. when was the last time a professional footballer, hockey player, rugby player die from doing their sport? how often do people drown while surfin? where are all the begginners and posers when the surf gets above 4ft?

surfing not extreme i dont think so!!

I think this article is AAAAAAAAAAWSOME!

For a while now on this forum the general feeling was that the sport is drawing in too many people who want to look cool cos they surf and that as a result most easily accessible breaks are overcrowded and sometimes dangerous.

I reckon this is the article which will start making surfing less popular, basically its making less *cool* so surely thats a good thing? It just means all the wannabes who care about others opinions will sell their foamies and move onto the next craze while those of us (although i have to stress that i am still a beginner too) who are genuinely into it will continue to love it regardless of how its viewed in terms of popular culture.

I actually reckon the author is a very clever surfer in disguise, trying to turn the tides on the current surfing explosion and thin out his local break a bit

I think one of the best ways to thin out a local break is to run out of the water screaming "shark, shark' at the top of your voice every hour or so

Well all i know, is that once summer is over all these tourists and wanna be one time go to the beach surfers will go away. Winters cold water drives em away, the bigger swell also drives them away, and the overcast sky drives em away and thats when i get the beach all to myself again, well not completely but i dont have to fight three people for every dam wave :x

also you cant make something "Un Extreme" just cause more people start doing. Ridng the face of an 8 foot and just tearin that xxxxx up will always be extreme, it doesnt matter if there a billion little kids riding white water, the fact is, whats extreme will always be extreme. Its like in snowboarding sure you get tons of tourists come to the mountain during peak winter season and they all suck ass and all they do is ride the little baby hills then leave, but that doesnt make snowboaridng unextreme. Cause then you still have those guys 5-0ing the four foot high rail with a 360 of the end, or those guys doin 720s up 20 feet in the air.

dam those kinds of articles piss me off with their ignorance. probably written by old men in ties and coats who are just lookin for a response.

but thats just my two cents on it
