Maybe you should check with the manufacturer about the product on your shades, it's not oily though.

alot of sun will irritate you eyes, kind of like a mini sunburn. then toss in the fact of a higher salt consentration, and a little sand getting in you eyes. what you get are majorly irritated eyes.

I wear my contact while surfing. One time, my contact scratched the cornea of my eye. I think the water splashed into my eyes. I went to the eye doctor and he gave me eye drops. It's better now. I don't have problem with the sun because I go surf at around 5pm. I tried to go earlier but the reflection of the sun reflected off the water is too bright.

Since I'm also a swimmer, I have a nice collection of swim-goggles. Most of them have UV-protection. Perfect for eye protection (solid seal as well, so no sand in eye) in the sea. And they don't cost much (maybe they look a bit silly ...).

Surfing injuries can be prevented with the use of protective equipment. Nose guards attached to the front of the board can prevent injury if you come into contact with the board. Helmets are necessary when surfing over large waves or reefs; wet suits worn for warmth will guard against cuts from fins, and hoods can protect your ears during a wipe-out. Booties are worn for warmth by some surfers and these can also protect the feet from cuts.
