You're probably pushing down too hard. The peaks get smashed down.

You could try the Hash Marks / checker board technique.

Put the wax bar on edge and draw diagonal lines from rail to rail. Strong pressure is okay for that part.
2nd part, lay the bar flat and do light circles.

What temperature wax(es) you're using ? What the air and sea temperature ?

To answer your question im in southern california. Using cool sex wax goes from 56 degrees to 64 degrees. The wax job in this picture is exactly what im going for. I start out with the diagonal crosses then i start going in circles but those bumps never form...

You are pushing down TOO HARD. Just ever so lightly skim over the top of the trees in the forest. Also after you make your diagonal lines with the edge of the wax bar, go up from nose to tail and rail to rail with the bar flat. Vertically and horizontally. THEN after that, do light circles.
