So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

I much prefer to eat sharks than to be eaten by them. Used to fish for large shoreline fish and caught big sharks once in a while. I ate them if I didn't have other fish in the freezer. They have no bones you know (cartilaginous fish) very good eating once you get the ammonia out of their meat.

I don't trust seafood. I won't touch tuna. The idea of eating adult fish that have spent their entire lives eating other fish contaminated with whatever just doesn't appeal to my appetite. To each their own though.

The prices go up because of supply and demand. Due to all the parties/gatherings during those times and of course the popularity of sashimi and poki the price goes up. I am just glad the price of beer doesn't do the same thing :) One important aspect of eating shark is to freeze it for a month and all the ammonia comes out of it then it is just a versatile white meat fish with no bones.

A lot of the fish in ‘fish and chips’ in Australia is shark (although called ‘flake’ to sound nicer). Just a chunk of solid white flesh, great for frying

I don't think shark is as popular in Hawaii as it is elsewhere. When I was in New Jersey I saw shark listed on top of the menu of seafood restaurants. In Hawaii they made a labeling law to require items with shark in them to be labeled as shark. The popularity of many items went down once they were shown to have shark. One of them was fish cake which is a very popular food item and for a while they often contained shark but not labeled as such. They pretty much quit selling shark fish cake and used other fish instead to make it but I used to make it myself because I love fish cake and I had lots of shark filet to make it with. Sometimes I would make a big burger sized fish cake and eat it in a sandwich. I smoked it, fried it, terriyaki it, bread and bake it but never tried it raw :) Talking to people back then they didn't want to eat shark because they felt like a cannibal eating something that eats humans. Not exactly logical but I can sort of see that rationale.

Not sure if I agree with that call. WA has sharks around at all times, does it not? Is it sharkier than J-Bay?

As you mentioned, they had some beached whales in the area and also a run of migrating fish at the same time. Maybe consider the event at a different time of year. I hear they get swell consistently.

They have drones, skis, helicopters looking for sharks, I would think that would be enough for the surfers. Heck, they were all surfing anyway outside the event.

I know that WA tourism sponsors the event, what a kick in the crotch to them!

My concern is that they drop that that event. I really liked the North Point events above Snapper and especially Bells.

Yes I guess it is difficult to make things right for 50 surfers all at the same time. There were two surfers attacked in two days during the contest window nearby which put a fear in some of the surfers. Hell I think they should have towed the whale carcass into the lineup and run the event. They could make it pay per view, some people would pay lots to watch surfers battle the sharks. (just kidding) They canceled the Jbay contest final due to Mick Fannings shark encounter by asking the surfers what they wanted. I am guessing they did the same this time.

LOL! My guess is that we've all had shark encounters, we just didn't know it...

Yep. Pretty sure for every shark I have seen there were multiple times that I didn't see them. I used to surf a break where all the surfers would leave the water when a shark was seen. There it was almost always just the fin seen of a shark cruising around outside the break. The surfers would all go in and wait till no fin was sighted for 20 minutes. After going along with this for a while I realized this was not logical. If you can see the fin cruising along outside the break then that is one shark you don't need to worry about. You know exactly where it is and it is outside of the break so I started staying out while they all went in.
