Yes you are right.

Surfing was sometime is really wanted to do for a long time (like when I was 15) so from that moment I watched a lot of surfing videos, such as the isurftibe channel ones that learned me how to pop-up and also saw/ look at a lot of the videos about escaping rips for surfers and swimmers, when I have lessons I always try to observate the conditions and when I didn't surf I would check conditions onlune so that is how I got familyer with reading the wave energie, swell direction and height, and swell period. (It still is hard to see rips tho, so I just check out the live cam and try to notice/recognize them from my living room) (I live at the beach break so the rips are constantly changing, and it's good to have some ocean knowledge).

I do know I will get wipe-outs and are not affraid of that, since I longboard/skateboard for 9 years so I do know that falling is part of learning a sport. (The waves at my beach are commenly 2-3 or 4ft high). So they don't tend to hold you under very long. I also do a lot of push-up and try to swim a lot to get my condition up.
