As I wasn't in the right section of the wave, I think I was trying to gain speed by shifting my weight into my front foot but as you can see, that didn't help at all and I've slowed down.

There is so much about this subject that is also about the board. Nose rocker, tail rocker & volume, etc... On my Stewart Tipster (huge tail rocker & volume) I have found that on REALLY small days I can cheat my body weight forward, and as soon as a steeper wave comes I have to super arch my back to move my center of gravity back, or I’ll get pearled. This isn’t an issue on other longboards I’ve ridden with less tail rocker, but those boards didn’t get into waves quite as easily. There’s so much to look for & learn!
