BaNZ wrote:The question is, how did you manage to get back to the beach? I've had that issue before where I went out when it was bigger than my comfort zone. Then I spend the next hour waiting for the smallest wave to get onshore again.

When I was younger I got into a lot of huge waves. My friend had dreams of becoming a big wave rider and that meant that we got into terrifying situations. When things got really scary and I headed back in, I always had to take a deep breath and focus on getting in front of the white water. If a huge wave expends all of its energy behind me and sends a wall of white water at me, I tend to take comfort in knowing that that white water is going to push me out of the impact zone. It's not exactly fun getting thrown around in massive white water, but it's nice to know you're leaving the impact zone in the most efficient way. The things that scare me the most with big waves are shallow reefs, shallow water, cliffs instead of a wide open sandy beach, ridiculously strong currents, being the only one out because your buddy decided to head in, sandy brown water breaking in big glops of foam (something about dirty brown waves sends a chill down my spine), and other things I probably repressed.

 thanks Jaffa! Although despite 3 years of kickboxing and being part of the fighters squad I've still never had a street fight in my life and largely try to avoid them where possible.

The irony is that the vice versa happened when my gym tried to get
Me in the ring. 3 times last year I had fights lined (my first proper one in the ring) and all three times the other
Various opponents pulled out!! One even pulled out the night of the weigh-in!
I'll make sure to post up some vids if one finally happens this year though

I have had many and there is never a winner....I almost always wound up in the hospital regardless of what was inflicted on the other guys. Probably the best part about knowing how to fight is confidence....easier to talk your way out of a mess or walk away if you know that push comes to shove you can handle yourself.

The thing about going to 9 foot waves is don't just go to 9 foot from surfing 4 to 5 foot waves. You have to work your way up. I think getting old is a good excuse not to surf 20 foot waves but 9 foot should be a doable thing. This is completely ignoring the 60 or 70 year olds who surf 20 foot or bigger waves. They have been doing it for a long time. It gets scarier the bigger you go but once you surf a bunch of 6 and 7 and 8 foot waves then 9 foot won't be so scary.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.
