Hawaii guy Makua Rothman won the big wave contest. Boy...watching that and the other big wave contests I realize I am so lucky to have had really smooth faces on the big waves I surfed the three times I did it. You can go to the link above and click on heat analyzer and chose the heat and watch all the waves. Notice how bumpy the faces are.

Any of you pay attention to these ASP contests? Want to guess who will win?

It's on right now. I am going to guess that Sebastian Zeitz has a good chance because it is a right with sections and Hanalei is often similar. Jordy Smith also is from there so has this wave dialed in. This is going to be about timing of the sections. Of course Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson may have a chance and Kelly Slater too if he is fit. Maybe John John can win this one if he is fit and Gabriel Medina may take it if the swell stays big enough because he has been surfing so well.

I don't know if you guys are paying attention to this contest but the rounds run so far are on the heat analyzer and you should go check out Freddie Patachia's 9.93 wave in the second heat. It is like the perfect backside wave. I love this heat analyzer function they do because J-Bay is like 12 hours different from Hawaii and I fall asleep at night watching it then wake up in the morning an can go check out all the waves I missed. Freddie P has been surfing well and I never thought he might be a contender here because he is backside at J-Bay. well so far Zeitz, Slater, Florence and Smith were eliminated. OMG who would have thought Slater or Smith would go down in the third round at J bay?

I just noticed Michel Bourez who has been doing really well and is like ranked number 2 got eliminated also. I think Jbay is a finesse kind of wave. You have to keep track of what the wave is doing and whatever you do keep up with the wave or it will pass you by ...you can't just power through every turn you have to keep up with the wave when you need to and keep track of how it's forming down the line. Wave selection is also very important so you pick the ones that are going to be bigger and have the potential for a long ride.
