Can I build my own reef??

Just my two cents, if this is something that is illegal, maybe you should have second thoughts about. You don't want anything bad to happen by doing something that may not be right. I am sure there are alot of other places to surf instead of doing something that just might get you in trouble.

Why dont you just ask if you can do it? Ask your nature department if you can cut up old ship wrecks and dump it where you want your spot. Tell them that it will attract reef life and new coral will form, plus tell them it will eventually be good for tourism. Just ask...

Sounds simple enough, but the problem is they won't want to assume responsibility. He'd have to jump through a ton of legal hoops plus get huge insurance. Possibly do an environmental impact study and the list goes on. Once you've asked, if rejected then they know who would be behind it.

To clarify, the ZGB (tm) is meant for use on the International Space Station. It employs the principals of centripetal force to keep the water from floating about. The bong itself doesn't defy gravity.

If it is gonna happen, I think it will happen underground. Others have tried to push a reef through at this location.....10 years later, nothing.

I feel if I ask, I will throw up the red flags.....in fact this thread is incriminating enough.

I started this thread cuz I was stoned and had an idea.....not that I don't think it is a great idea....I am interested in how our fellow surfers think about taking reef building in their own hands....without approval, and the runaround that goes with it. Want to know if other surfers think it would be ok, or if they think it is littering our oceans.

Is the ZGB(tm) solar operated......or does it come with rechargeable batteries...is it a vaporizer??..or do you need a lighter??... a lighter won't work in space!!

Well that's what you say. It's been a long time for me, but I remember feeling a lot lighter when I used a bong.

why not just pre-build a huge brick wall then put it out there and eventually the sand will build up against it and create a nice break! All you need is a massive crane and perhaps a helicopter... totally inconspicuous!!!

Concrete blocks placed in a line perpindicular to the shore, with a T shape at the end. We installed some to bring in sand to restore a beach (not with waves) and it pretty much makes a point break.

blocks would need to be 80+ pounds each to keep from being washed away....even then I have serious doubts in my plan.

I am worried that even if we get some bags down, they too will be washed away in storm surf.

I think when summer comes around I will sink some and see what happens. The days will be longer, and it will give me time after work.

Plus the surf is ripping now!!! why would I waste any time doing that.

Haha yup. It was pretty funny watching them install them. They lay them wide enough to drive an excavator out that puts the blocks on it. So waves crashing into a giant caterpillar excavator.

That would be fun to watch....Did they leave the excavator pad in as a jetty,or yank it when they finished??

So yes still there, they did it at low tide. I can't find any pictures....it was a couple years ago. Brought in a lot of sand where we needed it, in a point breakish type way, but then we had a bit of a turf battle with a local fisherman and he was claiming he was hitting it or something (clearly marked...) and it needed to be moved. Some people pissed him off and he had a right to be pissed equally but no way he was hitting it.
