Seriously, cut the locals some slack. They are the ones that spend weeks, even months waiting for the perfect waves to rock up, and they are the ones that pay the government to live there, and when some idiot from country zol comes and takes all the waves, then the locals are obviously going to hate the rest of the foreiners forever

I think this whole localism thing started because some douche bag from some other place snaked and dropped in on the locals, leading to the locals forming a group and murdering every foreiner that comes to surf their home break. But truth to be told, localism shouldnt be so violent. Just tune the dude to piss off, and tell him he can only surf once he has respect for the locals

So in a way, Im for localism. Sorry

Ok, then go ahead and be all "localish" to the guy who dropped in on and snaked on you. But cut some slack for people who wait their turn and show some respect to whoever is around you or me.

Ya, if the people wait their turn and respect the locals, then its all good. I personally dont tune people off that much if they snake or drop me, because Im ok with it, I get bleak, but I quickly get over it and say nothing. But when the same people make the mistake of dropping the more aggresive, seasoned locals, then they are asking for a smack

Yes a wave doesnt belong to anybody but mother nature, and yes its stupid that people claim its "their" break, but like someone said: localism will not go away

In a way localism is the police of surfing. It keeps people in check and stops people from being pigs. Maybe localism isnt the right word to use for my explanation. I think the words "I will beat you up if you steal my wave" are the right words to use. Thats the police of surfing, because it will keep people from hogging waves....

If I have offended anyone, I apologise

Yeah, if someone is in my house, eating my food, or hitting on my chick, I'd be in the right to start some agro.

...But which bit of the ocean are you claiming is YOURS?

By no means is the ocean anybody's. BUT, if I drop in on you, what are you going to do? What? Its not your ocean is it it? That gives me full right to snake and drop you :P ....not so? :D Its not my ocean, or yours, so I am allowed to do what I want because the wave that I just "stole" from you doesnt belong to anyone :D

Madness. It's just surfing, not a fight to the death.

Go and live somewhere without crowds if it stresses you that much. It's a big world....

Heehee - Wave Rage!!

Sucks, but if someone's aggro in the water, they're probably aggro on dry land, too.

If I were to accidentally bump into you in line at the grocery store, what would you do? Beat me up??

That is why it is called surf etiquette, not surf law. You can take all of the waves you want and you can drop in on anyone you like but really why would you want to be that ass? To me the person that is doing all that snaking just because the wave doesn't belong to anyone is just as bad as the guy saying he is going to kick your butt if you do it.
Just my 2 cents.

What about some rule enforcer, who sits on the shore with some shock weapon, he could just zap the offending surfer with a large electric jolt........might make you look over you shoulder before you burn someone.

Wow....just read what I wrote.....that must have been a good hit....!

i agree that there needs to be respect when surfing. obviously with so many people in the water, we need to be civilized.

im just annoyed when localism goes to the point where you cant even paddle out at a certain break without the "locals" telling you you dont belong there and you have to go in. There are a couple of places here, santa cruz, where its like that.

i mean yah if someone is continually being a snake or barney and is taking waves that arent theirs, then some words need to be said. and respect is always key. but localism that involves "owning" certain breaks, or fighting over one wave or something stupid is just wrong and depressing. but hey so is life i guess.

with so many a-holes on land, there are def. gonna be some in the water.

im glad to see all these positive responses
