Depends what side. If you're on the western parts of the islands you still get a bit of the gulf stream all the way up there, but obviously don't get that on the east. What you do get is the icy winds, which would make a bath feel like a bucket of ice! (I lived in Shetland for 5 years).

Is there not someone who pops on and off this site who surfs the Newfoundland area? Surely that could be the coldest.

its great dude. if you catch a nice offshore storm rolling up then its overhead glassy with some real power behind it. lost a board earlier this year to a heavy lip. its fun. let me know if you come on over

summer gets to around 16-17 celcius i think on the south coast, never been to the east coast in the summer (dont mark my word though) but when the suns out and the waves are up thats boardies weather. although we rarely get good waves when the sun is out...or at all in the summer

thats gotta suck. My favourite type of surf is a summer swell with the sun shining and boardies. Just big enough to keep most the beginers and groms away

lol its not so bad, you can surf in boardies throughout the summer if you feel like it but it gets cold after about an hour if theres no sun, but you get used to it living here

It can get to 15-16C on the East Coast towards the back end of summer and only down to maybe 4C at its coldest in winter. You've just got to invest in a good suit, boots, hood and gloves and you're ok.

Anyway once you're out you don't even think about the cold, just catching waves. The only bad thing can be hail stones, they can smart a bit and there's no shelter out in the water!

I've windsurfed in about 35 knots of wind with it gusting up to abot 45 knots with hailstones falling.... it is one of the most painful experiences ever! In the end I jumped off and hid under my sail until it stopped
