I got a flesh off at porthmoer way back in 94. Apart from that a few glares on the East Coast but most of the locals know my face now so its not too bad. The East Coast is pretty chilled compared to other spots despite the crowds.
There are spots that have a reputation but its not too bad, when its 4+ the East Coast beaches can be a paddle battle due to the shorter period stuff we tend to get so it keeps the crowds down a little.

I realise that as a localism story it isnt much hassle... until you realise that the dick that did it was a well known surf instructor in the area, who teaches beginner, improver and advanced classes. Not very intelligent to be hassling your own potential customers is it? :yearght:

Yeah I got hassled by a guy that I later saw in a surf shop who was trying to sell me a board.....

:(

I wouldn't know what to do if someone robbed my car whilst I was surfing and I'd be absolutely gutted! I'm getting a bit worried about taking my car now lol!

Whatever the reason why the guy was in the water, what happened on the beach afterwards was disgraceful and I can't see what would have provoked the beating he got!!

The only 'localism' I've ever noticed was from uni students in Anglesey who, despite only being transient 'locals' love to claim breaks as their own!!

Totaly agree. The assault in the water was bad enough but the guy on the beach was so far out of order and how no one stepped in to stop it!!!!

The whole localism thing really is the scurge of surfing.

Hmmm, I beg to differ :?
Bournemouth isnt a spot where people will get a good kicking or have their tyres slashed (its far too open and visible for that) but when its working, getting onto the peak is almost impossible. The locals dominate the tiny take-off zone and if you're not known in the line-up, you dont get jack

That's not really localism is it, more like the locals having the spot dialled.

The thing is with the vid is you don't know what the kid said.

A UK pro surfer had his jaw broke a couple of yrs ago north shore, you might be a ripper, but you have to respect the locals. Especially when there's a comp on.

the beating and poor display of BJJ on the beach was uncalled for and cowardly but seriously what was he thinking paddling out in the middle of heat/comp

^Just watched that video. Oh my god, that poor kid. He deserved what he got in the water but the beating he got on the beach was way out of line. And some of the comments on YouTube said that the kid has a mental disorder?

Me and a mate got our shoes stolen from the car while we were out surf at Taylors Mistake in Christchurch NZ. They left wallets with cash, boardbags, other clothes and everything else. I think it was a little bit of NZ localism.

Taylors is pretty chilled, I'd be surprised if it was that. More likely just kids messing around.

Have a look on trademe.co.nz - some tightwad will be trying to sell them at some point, nothing ever gets thrown away in NZ.

It's gonna be pumping in Chch this weekend, 4m S Swell at 15 seconds, with offshore winds :D

Flying back up there in a couple of hours, really excited
