Reading this makes it feel like its not safe anywhere. Reality is this is a post about thieves so youll get lots of bad stories. Granted it happens. Seems like here in Puerto Rico money is all thier after an its usually the very secluded spots they hit. My experience only.
For me i hide a key in the car really well. Second one goes in my pocket of the tether. Then i leave a door unlocked. If they want anything then by all means take it just dont break the damn windows. I make sure the cars cleaned out of most anything valuable. Ill even make sure theres a hefty handfull of change.
Doesn't matter how many steps you take, if someone wants it they will take it regardless. Be smart, but dont live in Fear, your session will be ruined if your constantly worried. That or let your friend drive.

I used to live in a crappy neighborhood and my car was broken into at least four times. It is incredibly annoying. Anyway, I bought a steering wheel lock (The Club) during that time. I use it now when I go surfing. I keep my encoded car key in a key safe (this one http://amzn.to/2fYIlZ3 BTW, I'm not trying to push the Club brand or anything. This was just the only key safe I could find that my 4 inch encoded car key would fit into.) I put my valet key, my car safe key, and my club steering wheel lock key in my wetsuit key pocket and leave my car key locked in my hidden car safe. So, a really persistent thief will have to go through 3 locks to steal my car: my car door lock, the car safe lock, and the steering wheel lock. It's not perfect security, but I can live with it.

The best thing to do is get a cheap $2 copy at your hardware store without the electronic hardware inside. Keep that one in your wetsuit pocket or your swim trunks at all times, it won't work for starting the car but you can keep your real keys (and remote) hidden in the car.

I also used to always worry about locking myself out of my car, now that will never happen because the 2nd key is always with me when I go surf.

This is what I do.....one thing beyond this is that when I get new boardies I take thread and needle and reinforce the ends of the pocket loop where it attaches to the inside of the pocket with several stitches. I use the key pocket in the leash sometimes but don't like that since it makes the cuff a little awkward with a flat piece of metal in it.

Just got my board stolen from on top of the roof rack yesterday. The guy didnt even untie the strap, just loosened it and slid the board out. This happened in a parking lot in downtown honolulu. I have been parking and leaving the board on top of car for months in the same parking lot and never anything had happened as the cashier is pretty close to where i park.
Regardless, it is a 8' town and country tanaka board with a heineken symbol in the front: green middle with a red star. This is my 3rd board stolen in in the last 12 months. I keep my board on top of my car no matter where i go so i deserve some of it. I will get a lockable strap.

Hope you catch the fker. But honestly, it looks like there are thieves around your area. I would be much more careful losing 1 board.
