Postby Johhny Tsunami » Wed Aug 13, 2008 8:39 pm

If you in cali and surfing Pipes in Cardiff - thieves hide in the hills and watch surfers hide keys to their car. They will take you car, or whats in it or both.

Use your key pocket!

I tie my car key round my neck on a bit of climbing cord. If the knot is right then nothing will be able to remove it without removing your head too inwhich case the key will be pretty useless. It needs to be adjusted so its a bit of a battle to get your head through the loop so that once its on its going to stay on. But it works.

A backpack is your best bet if your able to keep it in eye's view from the line up. I recall surfing at this spot with high localism, and a random guy told me if anyone tried to mess with my stuff; to tell him. Haha, I must of really looked like a grom, but that was one of those cool uncles.

thing is, if someone grabbed the bag and ran, by the time u had got out of the sea they would be well away. for car keys just use aqua pack but with phone etc, just leave it at home. even if you have your key windows aren't bullet proof

I recently had my car key knocked off out of my bag on Bondi beach, they went down the car park hitting the button till they found my car and took my wallet, gps etc. Pain in the arse. Cost me about $1000 all up. I bought a surf lock and love it, no need to worry about my key (My car key is electronic so I can't take it in the water).

i`ve always used one of those keypod thingies, but not any more!

Image

mine was sticking a bit - salt and sand getting into - decided to take it apart to see if i could clean it. i realised i could easily break into one of these in under a minute no probs!

please don`t use them or at least in a busy car park if possible- i`m sure theives have worked out how to get into them too.

Has anyone tried using a good old little sealable plastic see thru bag for your imobiliser keys? then you just put it in your key pocket in your wetty.

could use cling film (food wrap) if you aint got a suitable bag handy....... just have to wrap your key up loads. it costs sod all and it does work.

hey, sorry if someone has already said this, i didnt read the whole thread

But keeping your key on you is the way to go. I prefer on the boardshorts or wetsuit, then leash's little pocket then on the neck with a shoelace under the wetsuit. If you have one of those fancy keys that cant get wet, you could always go down to homedepot and get a normal key made. It might not start the car and only open it (my buddies' does) but you can lock the electronic key inside and then open the cardoor with the home depot key.

I don't see a need for bulky waterproof bags...

Alot of keys with transponders can be broken down so all you have to take in the water is the mechanical part of the door key!

Either that or live within walking distance of the local beach (as I do...luckily)

thieves are a big problem, but not just for surfers ! I used to leave my home open in the past years, I'm not scared about other, but that's not possible anymore.
We live in a different world, with thieves, and surfer are not out of the system.
modern economy is the number one problem... to many people on the side.

does anyone else get dropped off by friends like me? i usually take a pack of smokes(and lighter), a cell phone, and a bar of wax, i leave my board bag and the rest in the car for when it picks me up. ive never had a problem leaving them on the dunes before but you never know.... any good spots to hide them? (for now im going to put them in a baggie and bury them under a towel... its genius!)

If you have a key with a chip in it (as most cars do now days), Go get a regular metal key cut to keep on you while surfing. Keep your other key locked in the glove box next to a live cobra.

To take care of these worthless Crack Heads (chav). Just do what we do (Save your surf zone with team effort!). Set an old beater board in back of a truck, have the boys staged and ready to crack some skulls. Good swift kick to the knee cap will keep that worthless chav down for a few weeks. And if the cops show up.... Well he must of fell and hit his knee on a rock? I hate when that happens! Because doing nothing will only make them get more ballsy. Sending a few messages will get the word out. These parasites live off of easy pickings. So don't make it easy!

I use a keypod for the car key but i always take my bucket (flexitub thing for my wetsuit) down to the beach with some wax a mars bar and some water in it, last time i was out someone nicked it?? They rather apologetically left the 2 bars of wax, comb, mars and water but seriously why steal a 5 quid bucket?

Fist was clenched as i ran up to the car-park but they obviously watched me get in and waited til i wasn't looking, probably for the best that i didn't catch them as i don't really want a criminal record.
