Cayton Bay (UK).

Postby MikeT » Tue Sep 11, 2007 2:31 pm

Has been 3 weeks since last been to Cayton, and as a beginner I was desperate for some time in the sea. I could only get today off work so drove the hour journey from where I live.
The surf was, for me and the other 3 guys in there at the time, difficult to say the least. Couldnt get up on the board, the waves werent ideal really. The rip/current was strong and seemed to be moving diagonally, it was a good lesson for me to learn just how important it is to be alert! After an hour or so I gave up, felt like i had been battered enough!

For those who frequent the NE coast would I be better off at Scarborough south bay? I seem to remember reading somewhere that it tends to be a bit more "mellow", or was it just that I chose a day where the conditions werent good for a beginner?

Thanks for any info!

I can imagine it was a hard day up there short period stuff some size but clean. Not sure where you were on it but the rip normally runs over the sandbar at bunkers and out each side, diagonally out to the point.

South Bay is always a couple of foot smaller and as a learner when there is any size on it South Bay is a good choice.
