surf spots for a noob in oc and la

hello,

i just started surfing this weekend and got a hold of a 6ft fun board (although it really looks like a wider short board to me) i cant tell the different. i can use some help on where to surf for beginners in the la area and also oc area as im living between both areas. on the weekdays im in oc, and i was able to try surfing at laguna off brooks which seemed good for a beginner/intermed. i drove around the pch today looking for places off malibu or venice but had no luck finding a spot suitable. any recommendations would help for a place i can try sunday morning. thanks.
