roof rack nightmare

Postby pxk101 » Wed Jun 20, 2007 9:37 am

I used to carry my board inside my 4WD but I have now opted for a roofrack. Drove to Croyde - no problems all the way from Dorset. On way back - really loud vibrating/clattering sound as soon as I got above approx 45 mph . The roof rack was securely fastened. Board was right way up. Adjusted position of straps and position of board a few times. Had foam between roof rack and board. Gave up in the end and drove all the way back at 45mph! Sorry if you were stuck behind me! Any ideas? I do not have a board bag - would this have helped? My impression was that the front of the board was vibrating ahead of the most forward strap - but why there was no problem on the way I cannot explain. By the way I have a longboard. Any suggestions welcome.

Was it a strap that came loose, that happens to me sometimes, the end of the strap comes loose and vibrates against the roof of the car ??

it's not usually the board, usually it's the straps that vibrate on the car, and make a horrible sound, i used to get it when i had soft racks, don't worry though, the board shouldn't come off, but the paint on your car might, it's better to put something like a towel, between the straps and the car

could be the straps... try putting a twist in them, usually helps.

or maybe the board bag? it's only happened to me once, but I'd put the board on in a hurry and the bag (which is a bit longer than the board) didn't stretch out like normal so there was a bit of it dipping down in between the roof bars. It took me ages to figure out why there was such a hell of a noise, but once I'd undone it all and readjusted the bag so it didn't dip down at all in the middle, the noise stopped. just an idea...

Carrying boards on the roof always makes strangge noises, makes u jump sometimes. A lot of the times the straps will hum or buzz very loudly like a mental bee. Sometimes the ends of the straps will flap around & whack on the board or the car roof making a suprisingly loud noise. Sometimes the board bag handles do the same. As long as the board is secure then theres not much to worry about, just turn the music up a little & pretend it's not happening.
