Guns are specifically for big wave riding. The are long and thin so you can get alot of speed those large waves are going much faster than your normal wave. Dont quote me on this but youll probably need about 8ft+ to use it properly.
You could try the fabled cribber off fistral but its difficult to tell when its working

Winning a surfboard

Postby surf patrol » Thu Feb 05, 2004 12:23 am

Hi SidEwAzE, welcome to Surfing Waves,

At 6'0 this is not a gun. The board will be fine for surfing anything upto overhead. Australian boards tend to be thinner than English boards because the waves there have more oomph.
The board will probably not be much good on a mushy day but just take it out and give it a go.

How jammy are you winning a board ;D

ok cheers S-patrol....that makes more sense now cause its very short so i dint think it was ultra stable for big big waves, so what would you call it then? just a short board? so do you think its more suitable for fast barrels or something?? from the beach how do you tell that a wave really has more 'oomph' apart from the density of the wave? ie.what is it about the xxxxx auzie waves that makes them that way? and what is a shoulder on a wave? is that what makes it barrel??!

so how long do you think a board needs to be to be classified as a gun? would a fish be more suitable for this country? are fish boards easier/more designed to Carve it up? rather than gun it forward like a demon....is that the idea??!

really sorry for my ignorance but i am really a snowboarder!!!!

yeah totally lucky to win, i aM a LucKy girL!!!! :-)

The Fish is very similar to a Shortboard but is smaller in length. The lack of length is made up by an increase in the width of the board, giving it a slightly more rounded shape. Fish are generally between 4'8'' and 6'0''

The Gun is a bigger version of the Shortboard and is used in the big wave arena. The increased length of the board makes it possible to paddle into bigger waves. The Gun can be anywhere from 7'2'' in length to over 12' for the really big waves.

the oomph of the wave is all to do with the strength of the swell and distance the waves have to travel to get to the beach(fetch). Australia is surrounded bt alot more sea than britain hence stronger better quality waves. Although the biggest swells in the world are generated amazingly in the atlantic. Plus the southern hemisphere has the raging forties giving more consistent swell year round

6'0 definately aint a gun. im guessing this is jsut a thruster that is thin.

a gun is anything bigger than 6'4 im my mind. bigger waves, slightly more stable and what not

fishes are thick, short and heavy nosed. they are fun and easy to learn on, but not fast or manuvable(sp?).

hope it helped
