Localism, Worrying

To answer the question from VBnorthendsurfer, I ride wherever the surf looks best and least crowded. Sometimes around 63rd St, sometimes Sandbridge, occasionally Croatan or 1st St.

I moved here recently from Cape Town, South Africa, where I surfed for nearly 40 years. I started on long boards, moved to short boards when they arrived and last year moved up to a 7' 9" board.

Cape Town has great surf of all types and sizes almost any time of year. I heard of localism problems at some breaks there but never experienced problems with it myself. If we all behave within the rules there is no reason for problems.

Instead of arguing with each other, we need to work together to get a better deal from the authorities re where and when we can surf, parking problems and campaigning for an artificial reef somewhere just offshore for a barreling surf break.

i surf 65th alot, sandbrdge, 1st and croatan all about the same, once or twice a week. i like how little crowd there is at the north end, i have never had any porblems with anyone down there.

Sounds like we ride the same waves. Probably seen each other out there. I am watching for some swell to come to OBX then plan to head down there for a day.

haha that is what i do quite often. yea there hasnt been to much here to ride. where do you surf in OBX? i usually surf avalon pier.

I don't know the OBX breaks yet. Spent a weekend down there while in USA on a business trip 2 years ago. Surfed Pea Island and Hatteras but it was onshore the whole weekend.

Mid winter this year I went down for a day and found some really good surf at Naggs Head. Although only about 4ft it was fast, with nice shape. I caught the tide wrong so it faded after I had been in the water only 30 minutes. Man, the water was cold although the air was around 60 degrees, with warm offshore breeze. Next day I bought gloves to keep the frostbite away.

when the right swell hits pea island barrels really nice. yea i have winter surfed in nags head before in febuary, air temp was like 40-water 38 it sucked! and the waves were blown out by a nor-easter.
