Thank The gods of surfing the beaches are finally clear and some peace has returned. The past few days i have had no worries of someone to run in/drop in/slice up etc as its been totally clear expecially from 10am - 3pm im loving this.

I know I'm one of the ones you are glad to see go, but just how long does the peace last there? I went for my first surfing lesson to Mission Beach the last week of August-- incredible! Dying to go back this Fall/Winter to continue learning when it isn't crowded and I'm the one everyone has to look out for. But, I don't know how long the weather would permit there. I live in an ocean free state and it is a haul and $$ to get there but I'm dying to do it again soon. Any advice on those regards? Do you think there will be teachers around in the Fall/Winter? Thanks for any advice!

mission beach runs all year round surf lessons (i think the whole way up san diego coast does but particually mission beach area seems to be a learner hot spot.). I dont mind learner surfers its just that 20-30 learner surfers is a bit much  As for the weather it permits all year round you just need a wettie for those winter temps. Try staying in a hostel when you go again now winter is coming prices will drop to somehwere around $15 a night :D just avoid dec-jan thats big swell months.

I completely understand how 20-30 newbies would be a bit much. :o I hadn't even thought of hostels being in California. $$ is definitely an issue right now. I'll search the forum for info on them. Thanks for the info!!!

You rock!! After the info you gave I was able to pull a small group together to go to San Diego in October for next to nothing. Just needed some inspiration re: hostels, etc. Looked into prices and I'm doing the whole thing for about $350-400 including airfare! Big improvement over my last visit. I can barely wait! Thanks!

The trip was awesome, the hostel great and we all enjoyed the vibe there talking to all the other travelers. My sister and her husband were blown away at how beautiful, interesting and fun San Diego is and loved their surfing lessons. It was hard to convince them they wouldn't freeze to death but once they jumped in they had a blast and so did I even though I think I broke something in my foot. It'll heal and I'll be back asap!

We went down to OB and watched all the people surfing around the pier. You were probably down there! We were all sorta in awe watching the people winding between the columns there. Do you do that? I'm just too new at this to imagine doing that. Wow! Seen it in movies but didn't think it existed in real life. Thanks for telling us to go there because it was a cool thing to watch and dream about doing some day in the distant future!

Well, on to planning the next trip. I'm looking for my next travel companions amongst my friends and wondering which of them has strong bones and a tolerance for cold weather! :D

:D glad to hear you had a good trip. I have shot the pier before but only in mellow surf. You should see the daredevils in a big swell  Lots of broken boards and dinged pride from people shooting the pier. I probably was there as im in everday if you saw a dreadlocked whiteguy with a beard that was me :P
