Fixing Dings

Postby Laguna » Thu Jul 27, 2006 11:04 pm

Just wondering how you all go about fixing dings. Do you repair them yourself with a ding repair kit, or get a pro to do it for you?

I have a few dings on the tail of my board, only small but I read you should get them fixed straight away before they get worse.

Duct Tape works wonders.... after when my board is too full of Duct Tape and it starts getting too heavy, I will give my board to kitesurfer to fix.

I am lazy

i use suncure for the small cracks adn exposed foam if its not too bad, best stuff in the world. just slap it on and spread it and it dries, plus you can sand it down to look good.

but for the serious stuff i give to the surf shop and get a pro to fix it.

example: i was clumsy and my board was leaning against my wall and it fell and hit a cabinet, a big ding went in it and cracked the the glass, so i patched it up with sun cure. and another time i got destroyed on a closeout and my board flipped and my knee slammed into it, blood was everywhere and my board was split open, foam exposed. so i sent it in and the guy fixed it with some resin. easy as can be

The important thing for your boarsd is to keep it water tight. If water can get in then it's doing damage. Duct tape works fine for a while until you've got enough dings to warrent getting it fixed. If i was you buy yourself a kit and do it yourself, it'll save you lots of money. If you're worried about doing it take some photos stick them on here and i'll give you some pointers about what you need to do!

Duct tape?

Oh man.. get a tube of Solarez (unless you have an epoxy board, then get an epoxy kit).

Solarez is a great fix for dings and slices. It's easy to apply and cures quickly, and is cheap. Probably cheaper than duct tape.

I also have fixed a board with fiberglass and resin.. banged my tail off the sandbar, cracked it from the left fin through the middle of the swallowtail.

Got a kit with the fiberglass sheet, cut it to size, laid the resin, sanded, and better than new. No flex, and seems just as strong.

I have a question while fixing dings. When I get a crack in the fiber glass on my board should I just apply resin and sand it down once it dries?

Thanks KS. I thought it would be better and cheaper if I did it myself too. I have a few books which helps you on how to do it. Im not sure if I need to treat them now, theres about 4 small dings on the tail, feels really lumpy. Its not letting any water in or anything serious though
