hi there! my advice would be to go to a good surf school for just a couple of lessons, to get you started, then get yourself a board, as big as possible (as surf patrol would say) and a decent wetsuit (and gloves, boots and hood if you plan on surfing through the winter). i am a lone surfer too, and its probably harder when your on your own, but just go for it, get out there as much as possible. go see the beginners forum for more advice on a board :)

Yeah it is best to start on a bigger board. It might be a good idea to read the surfing lessons for begginners part of this site as this gives very good descriptions of how to do some of the things that need to be done when learning to surf. Then i suggest to just get out there as much as possible until you can surf confidently.

Learning to surf in East Anglia

Postby surf patrol » Mon Jan 05, 2004 4:07 am

Good advice - check out the Surfing for Beginners forum for some general tips - if you have any specific questions come back and well try and get you an answer.
East Anglia is where I learned to surf, my local breaks used to be East Runton and Cromer so it is possible to learn to surf in East Anglia. Lowestoft can get pretty good as well. There is also a strong surfing scene there so it will not take you too long to make some surfing buddies. It's probably hardest to learn to surf on your own so try persuading one of your mates to give it a go. If you are still on your own by summer why not get a few of your mates together and take a trip down to Newquay. Good nightlife for all and you may be able to get some interest in a bit of surf. Good luck with your surfing.

well i sugest u take a trip up to cornwall or some where were u'll find lots of other surfers u'll find surf schools surf shops and the rest of it bring some mates up with you. what i did was rent out a board and wetsuit, make suere you tell the guy that ure new at it and that u want a good board to start off on. then basically just teach ure self if you didi body barding as a kid then u will pick up how to catch a wave fast then u lear how to stand up, then learn to carve into the wave. if u bring some mates with you then u'll have a good time and there bound to get into surfing too its so adictive then u'll have some mates to surf with back where u live. when u rent out the bards ask to change the board type and experiment a bit. its alot cheaper than lessons and you'll have more of that valuble time in the water. make sure that you do have some one close by watching you back at ure home surfinmg groung ie some mates with u or a life gaurd as the sea is so powerfull u need alot of respect for it.
