ive always gone for the "look parent i have a huge floatation device attached to my leg and id be a hell of a lot more likely to drown without it" approach. swimming might be a good idea however im almost certain ive forgotten how to swim. everytime i wipe out i just tug on my leash until my board appears like magic next to me and get back on.

its not so much that its difficult to understand. its more along the lines of being a pain in the ass

i used to have a paranoid mother. then i stopped listening to her. she seems to be a lot less paranoid now

i would assume that the majority of people who become "statistics" arent the ones surfing. probably the kids just screwing around in the water without much experience with the oceans power, much less having any respect for it. nor do they have large live-saving flotation devices securely strapped to their ankles.

just ask your mom why she lets you cross the street without holding her hand when she wont let you go surfing. besides, what are your parents going to do from the beach anyways? watch you drown? its going to be the other surfers in the lineup with you who are going to be the ones taking immediate action should there be a need.

give it a go and best of luck to ya!

The inflateable lifejacket would not be a very good idea - I have to wear one to travel to work.
They are very uncomfortable, will restict your paddling, and you will be prone to accidental inflation - plus you probably wouldn't find the ripcoard in an emergency anyway.
Don't waste your money.
