i think its too old. ive been surfing for 3 years andi see kids out who are maybe 11 or 12 and can rip better than me. i doubt they have been surfing longer, but at that age you learn things so much faster and easier. i think its the same thing as taking a foriegn language in h.s. or college for years, when kids pick it up in a snap.

i've never used one but don't see any point in getting something that you are going to want to get rid of in less than a year. got with a board that you will want to ride in the time to come.

Dont know about upper age limits, but my boyfriend is teaching his son to surf. Hes 4 years old and is taking to it pretty well (hes been swimming since age 2 so has no problems with getting in the water).

Oh... and he looks absolutely gorgeous in his tiny wetsuit!

you shouldn't surf with the intention of becoming a pro surfer - you'll find the difference between a pro surfer & that guy you see carving it up at your local is a world tour t-shirt.. Seriously, i've seen some insane stuff @ whale beach in NSW, Australia - last weekend a guy was doing backflips off the back of waves - the most insane xxxxx i've ever seen -- why is he not on the pro circuit?

Surf because you love it -- if you're good enough, it'll happen, if not at least you'll be out there knowing you're doing something that drives you & makes you feel like a new person everytime you get out of the water.
