learning alone.

im really pumped about taking up surfing. i was going to be starting with one of my close mates but they dont seem to be as enthusiastic or serious as i am about it and im pretty sure that they wont start with me. this sucks as i was really excited about the whole prospect and i dont know anybody else that would learn with me. I dont even know why im posting this. maybe just because im so pissed off lol. ive read that you should surf with someone else, but now i have no one. any way to get around this? or just surf alone..?

Where you from? I started surfing alone because I always wanted to surf and when I got the money I just went for it, none of my friends surf either. You will eventually meet people who surf maybe through school, work or this forum, maybe even in the water.

i learned with a mate but ive pretty much been on my own since. if youre just starting off id recommend getting a lesson just so you know all the safety n etiquette stuff. also there will probly be other people there who are just learnin. none of my friends are intereseted either btw.

ye its very important to know the rules and safety when your in the water , like who's got the right of way to catch a wave and protecting yourself in water. I suggest either having a lesson or buying 'surfers start-up' or 'surfing a begginers manual' to read,

Ive been reading all the stuff on this website and trying to learn as much before i get in the water. Thanks for your replies.

ive been surfing for almost 3 years and have never gone with someone. self taught is the best way since styles are slightly different for everyone. just go on smaller days to crowded spots where someone can help if you get messed up or a place with a lifegaurd.. untill youre natural with most of it.

learning alone

Postby djg » Wed Jan 04, 2006 8:48 am

Hi x.hands__down.x, I have just started to learn, I had a few lessons last year and bought a board this week. I surf at Manly and was a bit apprehensive about surfing alone but i realised that most people in the line up were beginners with only a few consistently catching and riding waves. Maybe we were in a crap part of the beach to surf and all the good surfers know to be in the best part!

I would say get on with it and get in the water, the worst thing so far has been catching the bus with my 7'10" board, the old buses don't have a lot of height and i have to hope a new bus comes along so i don't get in everyones way!

If you plan to surf at Manly I might see you there.

I live on the central coast so I dont know how often I'll be up in manly but yea, maybe one day. Lol, too bad about the buses. That must suck. How long have you surfed for?

learning alone

Postby djg » Wed Jan 04, 2006 11:54 am

I had 4 lessons spaced over a month from October to November, I had a go on a borrowed board at Terrigal briefly just before christmas but got out the water after nearly running down a bodyboader! Then i got my own board this monday and thats it. So still a complete beginner.

I plan on surfing at Terrigal a lot. Kinda crowded but I'll find my way around that.

Whatever works for you. Just don't go out alone...meaning...make sure there's other people at the spot in case you get into trouble.
